For a long time, twitter android client just wasn’t very good compared to its iOS Client. So it is best to use third party twitter clients for best use. Even though the official application has improved drastically in the past years so especially with the material makeover there are still plenty of excellent alternative clients.
Many of the twitter clients have been abandoned after hitting the API token limit and since it can be hard to keep track of which applications are still in active development.
- Official twitter app
This wouldn’t be a very fair comparison without factoring in the official twitter client Despite the vast amount of third-party clients on the play store which offers the better functionality compare to official twitter client.
This twitter app consists of four tabs – the timeline, Search/Moments, notifications, Direct message. A sidebar reveals an account switcher, your lists, your moments, a night mode switch and other options like account and settings. You can tap on each tab to reveal its contents or swipe horizontally on the screen. You can compose a tweet with the floating button on the timeline and also can attach GIF, location, polls in your account. This app has a few unique features like moments, filter options, night mode etc. The moment is a collection of tweets about certain topics. Twitter itself curates a large number of moments, usually related to news, on a search tab. But anyone can create their own moments as well.
2. Talon for Twitter
Next is talon for twitter, developed by Klinker apps. Like most of the clients. One of the Talon’s major strength is customization. Such functionalities like scrolling up to refresh could be changed in the setting. Just like Fenix 2 you can modify and rearrange the app’s columns, which is handy for monitoring certain searches for twitter list.
Talon includes three base themes, which are light, dark and AMOLED black and you can set custom main colors for all of them. There are a lot of options like changing the look of tweets, from basic font/size settings to spacing and photo toggles. There is also a feature like Favorite Users to see the accounts of the user’s interests. You can even customize how the widgets look. The compose screen is far better than its official application. It has easy account switching, set location and a GIF button to easily embed images from GIPHY. You can schedule your tweet which is not available in the official application. It also allows the feature, requires your fingerprint to post anything for security purpose. You can download talon from here.
Flamingo is one of the top clients around at the moment. Like other apps on this list, It has a top bar at the top to switch between columns. By default, there are tabs for the timeline, your interactions, and direct messages.
As Talon, you can change the order of the columns, as well as add new ones – including trending topics, searches, lists, favorite users, drafts and more. Also like many other clients, a counter at the top shows how many new tweets you haven’t scroll through. Next to the counter is search button, Which shows the trending topics. On a top bar, there’s an account switcher, in case you don’t want to open the sidebar. It contains the account switcher, a scanner for QR codes generated by the official application, tweets saved for later, and some other functionality. The compose screen on Flamingo is better than it’s official application but not like a talon. Just like many other clients, it allows the user to schedule tweets for later. The main advantage is that there are 15 themes included, and you can save your designs as theme files which can later be imported. There are wide variety options for tweet appearance, font, text size, timeline media, and gestures. Although you can choose Talon against Flamingo. You can download the application form here.
Anyone can start off by registering for a free account with HootSuite to explore its various features. Once you have registered for the free HootSuite account you can select the different social networking sites with which HootSuite can integrate to view, schedule and post messages or tweet.
These sites could include twitter, facebook, Instagram, youtube or LinkedIn. It is important to note that HootSuite is accessed directly from your application and you need to install the freeware application in android from the play store. While adding these multiple social networking sites, you are asked to enter your corresponding twitter site login ids and passwords. It is clearly mentioned that you are authorizing HootSuite to gain access to your information on those specific sites. It even goes to inner levels for seeking authorization. And you can add only three social profiles with the free account. In order to manage more social media profiles like 100, you can upgrade to the HootSuite pro account for business anytime. At first, the HootSuite dashboard may look a little complicated. But once you start browsing around and taking a look at what it offers you will get that dashboard self-explanatory. It is even possible to add your WordPress blog with a free account.
Personally, I would choose talon and the official twitter application as my favorites. It functionally works very well for me. Talon comes with three clean looking themes and it allows detailed level customization of your dashboard or timeline.
