The Last of Us Season 2: Joel’s Death and the Road to Revenge

The Last of Us Season 2 trades the road trip for a revenge tragedy – and it is not interested in making you comfortable. Five years after Joel’s lie, the choice he made in that hospital comes back with a golf club in its hand, and Ellie’s grief sends her down a path the show refuses to call heroic.

Five Years Later in Jackson

Ellie (Bella Ramsey) is 19 now, settled in the Jackson community but drifting from Joel (Pedro Pascal), who can feel her pulling away and does not know how to fix it. She is falling for Dina; Joel is quietly carrying the weight of what he did in Salt Lake City. New faces round out the town – including Gail (Catherine O’Hara), the therapist who can see the fracture between them.

Abby’s Revenge

Meanwhile a group of outsiders is closing in. Abby (Kaitlyn Dever) is the daughter of the Firefly surgeon Joel killed to save Ellie – and she has spent years hunting the man responsible. When a massive infected assault on Jackson throws everything into chaos, Abby gets Joel exactly where she wants him.

The Death of Joel

In the season’s brutal turning point, Abby beats Joel to death – and forces a captured, screaming Ellie to watch. It is the event the whole story pivots on: the show kills its most beloved character early and dares you to keep watching. Ellie’s grief instantly hardens into a single purpose – find Abby, and everyone who helped her.

The Road to Seattle

Ellie and a pregnant Dina head to Seattle, deep into a war zone split between two factions – the militarized Washington Liberation Front (the “Wolves”) and the fanatical Seraphites (the “Scars”). Tracking Abby’s crew, Ellie starts crossing names off a list. She tortures Nora for Abby’s location; she kills Owen and Mel, and only afterward learns Mel was pregnant. Every kill costs her a little more of herself, and Dina watches it happen.

The Last of Us Season 2 Ending, Explained (Spoilers)

⚠️ Full spoilers for the Season 2 finale below.

Jesse follows the pair to Seattle to bring them home, and the survivors regroup at an abandoned theater. But Ellie’s rampage has consequences: Abby has learned her friends are dead, and she comes for the people who did it. She storms the theater, kills Jesse, and turns her gun on Ellie – a dark mirror of the hospital massacre that started all of this.

And then the show pulls the rug out. Rather than resolve the standoff, it rewinds and hands the story to Abby, cutting to “Seattle, Day One” from her point of view – promising that the next chapter will make us live inside the perspective of the woman we have spent all season hating. It is a cliffhanger built entirely out of empathy: the series is about to argue that the villain was the hero of her own story the whole time.

The Verdict

Season 2 is a harder, uglier, more divisive watch than Season 1 by design – it strips away the found-family warmth and replaces it with the cold arithmetic of revenge. Ramsey is ferocious, Dever is a genuine threat, and Joel’s early exit is a gut-punch the show earns. Whether you love the swerve to Abby or resent it, it is the boldest thing this franchise has ever done. 🔥
