GTA 6 Details: Six Stars, 30 FPS and No First Person at Launch

The Extended Look was only half of what Rockstar did on August 27. The other half was a press embargo lifting the same day, with journalists and creators flown to Rockstar North in Edinburgh for hands-off sessions. That produced a mountain of GTA 6 details the 26 minute video never shows, and some of them are bigger news than anything in it. Here are the GTA 6 details that matter, grouped by system.

We covered the showcase itself in our GTA 6 Extended Look breakdown. This is everything else.

The three GTA 6 details that actually made headlines

  • The wanted level goes back to six stars. GTA 5 capped at five. Six is a return to the San Andreas era ceiling, and it comes attached to a completely rebuilt police system.
  • 30 frames per second on console at launch. Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson confirmed 30 FPS is the target for base PS5 and Xbox Series. Asked about a 60 FPS performance mode later, he said he would have to check with the technical team, which is not a no but is definitely not a yes.
  • No full first person mode at launch. Rockstar put its animation effort into third person. First person aiming is still in for certain weapons, so this is not the total removal some coverage has implied, but the full FPS toggle from GTA 5 is not there on day one.

The police system is the most rebuilt thing in the game

Of all the GTA 6 details from the previews, the wanted system got the deepest overhaul, and it now behaves like an investigation rather than a timer.

Police are only alerted if a crime is actually witnessed or caught by a security system. Once they are, responding officers receive specific information about the incident and the suspect, and individual symbols on your HUD show you exactly what the police know. An outlined star means they do not have a confirmed visual description of you.

That turns escaping into a set of decisions rather than a chase:

  • Getting out of the search radius does not end the investigation the way it did in GTA 5.
  • Masks stop cameras getting your face during a job.
  • If they have your description, a barber visit clears it. If they have your clothing, you need a full outfit change, and your car trunk can hold spare outfits.
  • Ditching an identified getaway vehicle makes the search much less effective.
  • Jason and Lucia can split up, forcing the police to divide resources. One can get arrested while the other stays free.
  • Sprinting, vaulting and climbing were overhauled specifically to make on-foot escapes viable.

One star is easy to shake. Six triggers a genuine manhunt, and three or more is reportedly brutal in Vice City because the streets are narrow and crowded.

Robbery is now a risk-versus-reward decision

Money gates story progress, so you have to earn it, and the GTA 6 details here describe robberies with real trade-offs. Crack a safe by combination and it takes longer but you keep the full value. Blow it open and you are faster but you damage what is inside. The longer you stay in a building, the more likely police arrive. Most locations have a second exit. Stolen goods go through specialised fences, and vehicle fences will tell you which valuable cars are sitting in impounds.

Car theft has a preparation layer

Vehicle security is tiered. Older cars go with simple tools like a slim jim; luxury cars need key cloning gear you acquire later. The in-world WAINK app lets you scan a parked car to see its value, registration cost, lock status, alarm, and whether it has tracking. Advanced GPS trackers will report a stolen car’s position automatically, and damaged cars fetch less from a fence. Some vehicles only unlock through story progress.

The world and the people in it

  • Leonida is roughly three times the playable area of Red Dead Redemption 2, with Vice City itself about double Los Santos.
  • NPCs are individually art directed rather than procedurally generated, with real variation in height and build, and animations that adjust to body size.
  • They notice being followed or eavesdropped on. Some are armed and will start violence unprompted.
  • Snapmatic returns as a social platform you can browse and follow, but Jason and Lucia cannot post, because they are fugitives.
  • The phone is a physical object you raise, not a menu overlay.
  • There is a Ryde Me rideshare app for fast travel, and reportedly the largest set of radio and TV commercials in series history.
  • Non-crime activities include pool, mini golf, kayaking, diving, parachuting, the gym and the zoo. Wildlife can be logged on a checklist.

Jason and Lucia, and whether they are a couple

This is the GTA 6 details item most people missed. The romance is optional. You can play their partnership as platonic, or build the relationship by spending time together: working out, shopping, sightseeing, committing crimes. The previews describe small tells like hand holding and holding doors. Both characters run independent schedules when you are not controlling them, and Lucia’s ankle monitor is described as central to the campaign.

The campaign is chapter based, runs about 80 hours for story plus narrative side content, and offers multiple approaches and escape routes per mission, with choices ranging from cosmetic to genuinely story altering.

The criminal profile, explained properly

It is not a morality meter. It does not sort you into good and evil the way Red Dead Redemption 2’s honour system did. It tracks how you operate, and the world responds. Unnecessary violence and pointless destruction hurt it. Efficient, clean crime improves your standing. Violence the mission requires does not automatically count against you. Small civic things, down to disposing of rubbish properly, feed into it.

Customisation and the safehouse

The shared home works like a Red Dead Redemption 2 camp, with other characters coming and going. You can shave head and facial hair at home but need a salon for actual styles, and each shop stocks different options. Physical build responds to how you eat and train: work out and you gain muscle, overeat and you gain weight. Meals restore a meaningful amount of health.

What we still do not know

  • Whether a 60 FPS performance mode arrives after launch, and what the PS5 Pro does differently.
  • Anything at all about the online mode, which was absent from both the video and the previews.
  • Whether first person returns post launch.
  • A PC version. November 19 is PS5 and Xbox Series only, and Rockstar has still not announced PC.

How solid are these GTA 6 details?

Worth being straight about sourcing. The frame rate and first person points come from Rob Nelson directly, relayed by creators who were in the room at Rockstar North. The systems detail comes from multiple outlets who attended the same sessions and broadly agree with each other. None of it is hands-on: nobody outside Rockstar has played this game. Treat specifics like exact star behaviour as descriptions of a build in progress rather than shipped fact.

Grand Theft Auto VI launches November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X and S.

More: our Extended Look breakdown covers the showcase itself, the GTA 6 hub has every confirmed fact, and we explained why Rockstar went to Netflix first.

Six stars back, but 30 FPS and no first person. Fair trade, or not? Comments are open.
