FROM characters are hard to keep track of. Four seasons in, the town has buried its priest, its diner owner and Jim Matthews, turned one of its own into a monster, and found out the Man in Yellow has been living among them as a 16-year-old girl. This guide lists every major FROM character, who plays them, what they have been through, and whether they are alive, dead or turned going into the final season.
Spoiler warning: this covers all four seasons, including the season 4 finale.
If you want the story itself rather than the people, start with our FROM series explained guide, then come back here.
FROM characters at a glance: who is alive after season 4
- Alive: Boyd, Tabitha, Julie, Ethan, Donna, Kenny, Kristi, Jade, Ellis, Sara, Victor, Henry, Randall, Acosta, Bakta
- Dead: Jim (end of season 3), Father Khatri (season 1), Tian-Chen (season 3), Tillie (season 3), Roger (season 4), the Pastor (season 4), Elgin and Marielle (season 4 finale)
- Turned: Fatima, who became a creature in the finale
- Working against the town: Sophia (the Man in Yellow) and Clara
- Not alive or dead in the normal sense: the Boy in White and Smiley
The Matthews family: the FROM characters at the centre
Tabitha Matthews (Catalina Sandino Moreno)

The mother of Julie and Ethan, and the town’s visionary. At the end of season 2 the Boy in White pushes her out of a window and she wakes up in the outside world, where she meets Henry and comes back in with the season 3 ambulance. She learns she is Miranda Kavanaugh reborn. In season 4 she finds the children’s bones with Jade and gets out through the tunnels. Status: alive.
Jim Matthews (Eion Bailey)

The engineer who spent three seasons trying to science his way out: the radio, the lighthouse, the bottle tree numbers read as musical notes. The Man in Yellow kills him at the end of season 3 with Julie watching, and season 4 opens on it. He appears to Ethan in a vision in season 4. Status: dead.
Julie Matthews (Hannah Cheramy)
Jim and Tabitha’s daughter. She has visions, falls into a coma in season 2, has seizures in season 3 and sees her father die. In season 4 she tries to travel back in time twice, and Randall pulls her back both times. Status: alive.
Ethan Matthews (Simon Webster)
The youngest Matthews, and the one the Boy in White and the voice on the phone seem to talk to most. In season 4 a vision of Jim tells him the Lake of Tears is real, and he joins the trip to find it. Status: alive.
Boyd, Ellis and the people running the town
Boyd Stevens (Harold Perrineau)

The sheriff and, in practice, the mayor. Boyd holds the town together while hiding his worsening Parkinson’s. In season 2 he carries Martin’s parasites and uses them to kill a creature. In season 4 he hits bottom and counts out 47 bullets for a mass suicide, then turns around, backs Jade’s plan, pulls down the bottle tree and goes back into the tunnels for Jade and Tabitha. Status: alive.
Ellis Stevens (Corteon Moore)
Boyd’s son, estranged from him at the start. He proposes to Fatima at the end of season 1 and is married to her by season 3. In the finale Boyd has to pull him away as Fatima transforms. Status: alive.
Donna Raines (Elizabeth Saunders)
The leader of Colony House, its farm and its rules, and Boyd’s most frequent sparring partner. In season 4 she has a heart attack; Boyd saves her and Kristi stabilizes her. Status: alive.
Kenny Liu (Ricky He)
Boyd’s deputy. He loses his mother Tian-Chen in the season 3 premiere and moves into Colony House, and Boyd tells him to get ready to lead. In season 4 his totem fails against a creature and Fatima saves him from Smiley. Status: alive.
Kristi Miller (Chloe Van Landschoot)
The town’s doctor, who treats every crisis from the creature autopsy to Donna’s heart attack. In season 4 she finds that Fatima should be clinically dead. Her fiancee Marielle dies in her arms in the finale. Status: alive.
The Colony House and bus arrivals
Jade Herrera (David Alpay)
The rich software developer who started as the town’s loudest skeptic and became its code breaker. At the end of season 3 he learns he is Christopher reborn. In season 4 a hallucinogenic trip shows him his past selves were killed after linking themselves to the children, so he pushes to find the bones and stays behind so Tabitha can get out. He is rescued. Status: alive.
Fatima Hassan (Pegah Ghafoori)
The most changed of all the FROM characters. Her strange pregnancy takes over season 3: she kills Tillie, Elgin hides her, and she gives birth to Smiley. In season 4 she shapes a golem, gains some control over Smiley, and drinks a drink Clara has laced with Sophia’s blood. Kristi finds she should be clinically dead. In the finale she turns into a creature and holds the others off. The episode does not say whether the change is permanent. Status: turned.
Sara Myers (Avery Konrad)
The diner worker who hears voices. The voices drive her to kill her brother Nathan in season 1, which makes her an outcast. Later they start giving useful warnings, and in the finale she hears Morse code and stops Boyd. Status: alive.
Victor Kavanaugh (Scott McCord)
Trapped in town since he was a boy, Victor is its memory, with his drawings and the belongings of the dead. He reunites with his father Henry after forty years in season 3. In season 4 he reveals the Man in Yellow ate people including his mother Miranda, and finds a sack of teeth in the Man in Yellow’s car. Status: alive.
Henry Kavanaugh (Robert Joy)
Victor’s father, who meets Tabitha in Maine and comes in with the season 3 ambulance. In season 4 Sophia secretly puts her blood in his drink, he starts hallucinating, and in the finale he turns Boyd’s gun on Victor and fails. Status: alive.
Randall Kirkland (A.J. Simmons)
The volatile bus passenger who held Jim at knifepoint in season 2 and ended it in a coma. The creatures torture him and leave him alive in season 3. By season 4 he is the one pulling Julie back from her time jumps. Status: alive.
Dani Acosta (Samantha Brown)
A police officer chased into town in season 3, who accidentally shoots Nicky dead. She is arrested in season 4 for stealing the ambulance, and in the finale hits a creature with the van. Status: alive.
Who has died in FROM
Eight FROM characters with real weight in the story are gone so far:
- Father Khatri (Shaun Majumder): the town’s priest and author of the “74th book” theory. Killed by a creature in season 1, episode 7, dying in Boyd’s arms. He still appears to Boyd in visions.
- Tian-Chen Liu (Elizabeth Moy): Kenny’s mother, who ran the diner. Tortured and killed by creatures in the barn in the season 3 premiere while Boyd was forced to watch.
- Tillie (Deborah Grover): the cheerful bus passenger who comforted Fatima. Fatima stabs her in the greenhouse in season 3.
- Jim Matthews: killed by the Man in Yellow at the end of season 3.
- The Pastor (Rhys Bevan-John): arrives with Sophia in the season 4 premiere and is smothered by her at the end of that episode.
- Roger (Eugene Sampang): killed by the straw dolls from the lake in season 4, reanimated by Sophia, then destroyed by Elgin with a totem.
- Elgin Williams (Nathan D. Simmons): the dreamer who hid Fatima in the cellar. In the finale he refuses Sophia’s deal and starts to pray, and she kills him.
- Marielle Sinclair (Kaelen Ohm): Kristi’s fiancee. Smiley kills her in the clinic in the finale.
The FROM characters who are not on the town’s side

Sophia, the Man in Yellow (Julia Doyle)
The entity behind the town. He kills Jim at the end of season 3, then walks in at the start of season 4 as Sophia, a 16-year-old newcomer, and smothers the pastor she arrived with. Over the season she feeds her blood to Henry, recruits Clara, reanimates Roger, kills Elgin and gets rid of the talismans. She ends the season walking into the forest with the Boy in White. Co-creator Jeff Pinkner put it this way to ScreenRant: “The Man in Yellow has created a condition where people are called back to this Town and suffer here, and it’s the suffering that fuels him.” Status: alive, and winning.
Clara (Katerina Bakolias)
A superstitious Colony House resident who was in the background for years. In season 4 Sophia reveals herself to her and Clara becomes the mole: she gives Fatima the blood-laced drink, disposes of Elgin’s body and gathers the talismans for Sophia to dump into the tree. Co-creator John Griffin told SciFi Vision the idea arrived as a text from Pinkner: “Clara should be the mole!” Status: alive, working with Sophia.
The Boy in White (Vox Smith)
The ghostly child who has been guiding people since season 1, and who pushed Tabitha out of that window. In the finale he tells Sophia the town has the bones now and that she will lose this time. She greets him with: “Oh, look at you, all grown up.” Status: active.
Smiley
The grinning lead creature, tied to Boyd and Ellis since season 1. He is reborn through Fatima at the end of season 3. In the finale he kills Marielle, calls Fatima “Mother” and leaves. Status: still out there.

FROM season 5: who is coming back
MGM+ renewed FROM for a fifth and final season on April 15, 2026, four days before season 4 premiered. Filming started in July 2026 in Nova Scotia and is scheduled to wrap in late November, with the final season due in 2027. No trade outlet has reported new FROM characters or returning season 5 cast beyond the main ensemble. One detail fans spotted: a cast photo from the start of filming, shared on Instagram and reported by ScreenRant, includes Nathan D. Simmons, even though Elgin died in the finale. Flashback, vision or just a visit to set, nobody knows yet. Our FROM season 5 guide has everything else.
Our take
Honestly, almost everything about FROM confused me the first time through, and that is exactly why we made this list of FROM characters.
The one I can’t stop thinking about is Smiley, the grinning creature who dies and just comes back.
Who survives season 5? This one is hard to call. The show has killed people nobody expected, and with Sophia in the open, nobody feels safe.
My theory: the Man in Yellow might be a scientist whose experiment went wrong, and everything in the town started from that.
Catch up season by season: season 1, season 2, season 3 and the FROM season 4 ending explained. Waiting for season 5? Try our shows like FROM.
