FROM season 4 is the season the town stopped being a mystery and started being a fight. Ten episodes took the residents from a mass suicide plan to a hole under the bottle tree with the children’s bones in their hands. It also ended with every talisman in town thrown into a tree by the one person nobody suspected. Season 4 ran from April 19 to June 28, 2026 on MGM+, and the finale, If a Tree Falls in the Forest…, sets up a fifth and final season. Full recap and ending explained below.

What happened in FROM season 4
Season 3 ended with the Man in Yellow killing Jim Matthews while Julie watched. FROM season 4 opens on that same moment, and then makes it worse: Julie has been living the same stretch of time more than once, and she spends the season trying to rewrite it to save her father. She cannot. She is inside the loop, not above it.
Boyd Stevens starts the season at the bottom. Convinced the creatures cannot be beaten, he quietly counts out bullets for everyone in town, a mass suicide dressed up as mercy. What pulls him back is not hope, it is Donna Raines having a heart attack. People are dying of ordinary things now, and the clock is not the monsters, it is time.
Then a car comes off the road into town carrying a pastor and a teenage girl called Sophia. The show does not make you wait for this one. Sophia is the Man in Yellow wearing a new face, and FROM season 4 tips it in the premiere with a verse: Satan himself appears as an angel of light. For the rest of the season the audience watches the residents confide in, protect and take advice from the thing that has been farming them.
The other half of the season is Jade Herrera and Tabitha Matthews working out the rules. Jade lands on the shape of it: the town is a cycle, it has run many times, and the reason it keeps running is buried under it. The bodies of the children. Lay them to rest and the machine stops. The problem is reaching them, because the bottle tree no longer takes Tabitha to the lighthouse. The rules changed while they were still learning the old ones.
The middle of the season fills in the mechanics, which matters because the finale is built entirely out of them. Talismans stop the creatures but do nothing against the life-size dolls or the reanimated dead. Totems work on the dolls and the dead and do nothing against the creatures. Smiley, the thing Fatima carried and Kenny burned, is alive in the tunnels. And Fatima Hassan is deteriorating in a way Kristi Miller cannot treat: veins spreading across her stomach, and test results that say she is, medically, already dead.
The turn comes in episode eight. Tabitha meets the Man in Yellow at an abandoned RV and he does not kill her. He wants to watch how close she and Jade get. He tells her that in every previous cycle, nobody has ever thought to dig up the bones. Then he suggests doing it might be catastrophic. He is either warning her or steering her, and FROM season 4 never tells you which.
The FROM season 4 ending explained
The finale runs two operations at once, and only one of them is the one the residents know about.
Underground, Tabitha and Jade reach the chamber beneath the bottle tree and start collecting the children’s bones. To get them out, the tree has to come down. It does, and the response is immediate: red lightning tears up out of the ground and spreads across the sky, daylight goes dark, the earth shakes, and the creatures come out in the middle of the day. Whatever the bones are, the town does not want them moved.
Above ground, Sophia and her follower Clara are going house to house. They are not helping. They are collecting every talisman in Fromville and throwing them into the Faraway Tree. By the end of the hour the town has no protection at all, and almost nobody knows.
FROM season 4 then proves the talismans were never superstition. During the quake one falls from its hook at the clinic, and Smiley walks straight in through the door it was holding shut.
Who dies in the FROM season 4 finale
- Marielle is killed by Smiley in the clinic, moments after the talisman falls. It is fast and it is not merciful.
- Elgin works out what Sophia is on his own, after finding a photograph from the 1960s that puts her face where it should not be. He refuses her offer to join her, tries prayer instead, and dies bleeding from his eyes and mouth.
- Victor Kavanaugh survives an attempt on his life by his own father. Henry has been having visions of a nurse at a care facility telling him to kill his son. The nurse is the Man in Yellow. Victor knocks the gun away in time.
The season’s cruelty is in the pattern. Elgin is the one resident who figures out the disguise, and being right is what kills him.
What happened to Fatima in FROM season 4
The biggest question the finale leaves is not a death. Fatima drinks an herbal mixture that Clara hands her on Sophia’s instruction, and it finishes what her pregnancy started. In the tunnels, with the creatures closing on the group carrying the bones, she turns. She becomes one of them, and then she screams at them in their own language and holds them off.
That buys Boyd, Ellis, Tabitha and Jade the seconds they need to get out with the bones. Her last words as herself are a request rather than a goodbye: remember who I was.
FROM season 4 never shows her dead. She is changed, she is loose in the tunnels, and she is the only creature in the show’s history that used to be a person we know. Whether anything of Fatima can be brought back is the single most likely engine of the final season.
Sophia, the Man in Yellow and the Boy in White
The last scene of FROM season 4 is two entities talking, and it reframes four seasons.
Sophia is at the Faraway Tree, feeding the town’s talismans into it. The Boy in White appears. He tells her the Man in Yellow is not going to win this time, because the residents have the bones. She looks at him and remarks that he is all grown up, which is the first on-screen acknowledgment that his aging across the seasons means something.
Co-creators Jeff Pinkner and John Griffin have been direct about what that scene establishes. “They are aware of each other,” Griffin said of the two figures, confirming they have been operating in the background of the same game the whole time. Pinkner described the arrangement plainly: the Man in Yellow “has created a condition where people are called back to this Town and suffer here, and it’s the suffering that fuels him.”
Two other things follow from that. The Boy in White is not neutral, he is on the residents’ side, but he helps sideways rather than directly, while the Man in Yellow intervenes and sabotages in person. And the outcome is not fixed. The Man in Yellow does not know whether he wins, which is why he came out from behind the curtain at all. Griffin points at Jim’s death as the moment that forced him: “Jim’s death is the one that brings the Man in Yellow out of the shadows. It signifies that this cycle has reached a point.”
What FROM season 5 has to answer
MGM+ renewed FROM on April 15, 2026 for a fifth and final season, before season 4 had even finished airing. Filming ran in Nova Scotia from July through late November 2026, with a 2027 premiere expected. Pinkner’s description of it is one word: “Season 5 is the endgame.”
The board it inherits from FROM season 4:
- The bones are out. Both the Boy in White and the residents believe this is the thing that breaks the cycle. The Man in Yellow hinted it would be catastrophic. Both can be true.
- The red lightning. Unexplained, and it started the moment the tree came down.
- A town with no talismans. The one rule that reliably kept people alive at night is gone, and the residents do not know it yet.
- Fatima. Turned, not dead, and still capable of choosing.
- Julie and Jim. Julie is stuck inside a loop she cannot edit, and the show has not said what that costs her.
Critics rated FROM season 4 at 96 percent on Rotten Tomatoes across 20 reviews, the show’s strongest season on record. The audience score sat far lower at 63 percent, which is the tension this show has always lived with: it answers questions at exactly the pace that thrills critics and frustrates viewers who have been waiting four years. With one season left, that stops being a strategy and starts being a promise.
