The God of War Laufey delay is official. Santa Monica Studio announced on November 4, 2026 that the game has moved from February 16 to May 20, 2027, a wait of roughly three months longer. It is still a PS5 exclusive.
The date we are replacing is the one set at Comic-Con in July, which our release date post covers.
What Santa Monica Studio said
The studio posted a statement on social media, and Game Informer and Shacknews both carried it. In it, Santa Monica Studio thanks fans for their excitement about Faye’s journey and says it will use the extra months for “the finishing touches” and to push the game “to its fullest potential.”
That is the whole explanation. There is no mention of a specific problem, a feature being cut or a technical issue. The two outlets quote one sentence with slightly different wording, so we are paraphrasing it here instead of picking one.
What changes for you
- The date. May 20, 2027, instead of February 16, 2027.
- The platform. Still PS5 only. Nothing has been announced for PC, and our PC post still holds.
- Pre-orders. Neither Game Informer nor Shacknews says what happens to them. Check your order page on the PlayStation Store or your retailer before you assume anything. Our pre-order guide lists the editions and prices, which the delay does not change as far as anyone has said.
Is three months a big delay?
Not by this studio’s standards. God of War Ragnarok was first aimed at 2021 and shipped in November 2022. A move of three months, announced about six and a half months before the old date, is small next to that.
It is still a real cost for anyone who planned around February. A game moving to May also lands further from the holiday season, which is when many people have time off to play a game this size.
Our take
I am annoyed. I had February 16 in my head, and now there are three more months of waiting for a game I already want.
But I read this one as polish, not trouble. The studio’s own words point to finishing touches, the delay is short, and a game that was in real difficulty would usually lose a year, not a quarter. Waiting for a better version of Faye’s story is an easy trade once the annoyance passes.
If you have already pre-ordered, the safest move is to keep your order and watch for an email or notice from the store. We will update this post if Sony or Santa Monica Studio confirms anything about pre-orders.
