After two months of “sometime in 2027” guesswork, we have a date.
At San Diego Comic-Con on July 24, Santa Monica Studio confirmed that God of War Laufey launches on February 16, 2027, exclusively on PlayStation 5.
What was actually announced
- Release date: February 16, 2027
- Platform: PlayStation 5
- Physical release: confirmed - the game ships on a disc
- Bonus reveal: the next Kratos-led God of War is in development and connects directly to this story
Cory Barlog delivered the date on stage. Christopher Judge, the voice of Kratos, joined him and spoke about his own history with the role - including how hesitant he once was to take a video game role at all, and why he sees Faye as “the genesis of the change of Kratos” and the reason he ever started moving toward hope and forgiveness.
The disc thing matters more than it sounds
Santa Monica had already promised a physical disc release in early July, before any date existed. Sony had just announced that it will stop producing discs for new PlayStation games from January 2028, so a disc meant a launch before 2028. That promise is what let people work out the rough window in the first place, and it is a bigger deal than it looks.
Sony is no longer quietly drifting toward digital: it has set a cut-off date, and the PS5 Digital Edition has no disc drive at all. A studio publicly committing to a physical version - and then repeating that commitment at Comic-Con - is a direct signal to the part of the audience that still wants something on a shelf.
February 2027 is getting crowded
The date does not land in empty space. February 2027 is filling up fast with major releases, and Laufey is now walking into a genuinely competitive window rather than the quiet post-holiday slot Sony has used before.
There is also a platform war angle. With Sony planting a flag on February 16, the pressure moves to everyone else holding an unannounced early-2027 date to decide whether they want to be anywhere near it.
What is still missing
A date is not a pre-order page. Sony has not announced:
- Pricing
- Standard, deluxe or collector’s editions
- Pre-order bonuses
- Any steelbook, statue or controller tie-ins
If the studio follows its own pattern from Ragnarök, expect that wave to arrive a few months out rather than immediately.
