Marvel finally pulled the trigger. On Monday, July 20, the first full trailer for Avengers: Doomsday hit the internet — and promptly racked up a million views in its first 30 minutes. Robert Downey Jr. is back in the MCU, except this time he’s not the guy who saves the world. He’s the guy the world needs saving from.
We’ve watched the Avengers: Doomsday trailer more times than we’re willing to admit. Here’s everything we caught — the big swings, the blink-and-you-miss-it details, and the one moment that made every Marvel fan’s heart stop.

Our Avengers: Doomsday trailer breakdown — scene by scene
1. Professor X watches a planet fall out of the sky
The Avengers: Doomsday trailer opens quietly. Sir Patrick Stewart’s Charles Xavier looks out a window — and sees another world hanging in the sky, ready to collide with his own. That’s an incursion: two universes crashing into each other, a concept the MCU first teased in Multiverse of Madness. Here, it’s not a theory anymore. It’s the plot.
2. Doctor Doom doesn’t walk in — he arrives
Mask. Hood. Armor. Green robes. RDJ plays Doom with a faint Eastern European accent (a nod to his fictional homeland of Latveria), and his voiceover sets the tone for the whole film — a warning that something “that cannot be deterred” is coming, and that an “unthinkable decision” will have to be made.
Notice what Doom isn’t doing in this trailer: twirling his mustache. He sounds less like a conqueror and more like the only adult in the room. That should worry you. (We called this the most controversial Marvel casting in years when it was announced — and we stand by it.) More on this in the theory section below.
3. He deflects Stormbreaker. With his fingers.
The power-level statement of the trailer: Thor hurls Stormbreaker — the axe forged to kill Thanos — and Doom swats it aside like a fly. Casually. Thanos at least had to catch the blade with two hands. Doom barely looks at it.
4. Thor stands in the ruins of Xavier’s mansion
Look at the rubble behind Thor during his confrontation with Doom: those are wrecked Sentinels — the giant mutant-hunting robots, finally in a mainline MCU movie. Something tore through Xavier’s School before the Avengers ever got there. The question is who.
5. Three Earths on a collision course
A monitor screen flashes three worlds heading toward each other: Earth-616 (the Avengers), Earth-828 (the Fantastic Four’s retro-future world), and the X-Men’s Earth. That’s the movie in a single image — three franchises, one collision, and no indication all three survive it.
6. Thor gives the big speech at the Watchtower
Chris Hemsworth’s Thor — flanked by Sam Wilson’s Captain America, Ant-Man, the New Avengers, and the Fantastic Four — admits he’s afraid of what’s coming. When the God of Thunder, a thousand-plus years old, says a threat is unlike anything he’s seen? That’s your stakes established in one line.
7. Wakanda meets Talokan — and the ocean is gone
Shuri’s Black Panther, M’Baku, and Wakandan warriors stand across from Namor’s Talokan forces — and the waters around the underwater kingdom have been pushed back entirely. Whatever’s happening to the multiverse is already breaking the laws of nature. Old enemies from Wakanda Forever may not have a choice about teaming up.
8. The X-Men are here — yellow spandex and all
Patrick Stewart. Ian McKellen’s Magneto. James Marsden’s Cyclops. Rebecca Romijn’s Mystique. Channing Tatum’s Gambit, finally in a proper movie after his Deadpool & Wolverine cameo. And the costumes are pulled straight from the Jim Lee era — the bold 90s animated-series look. No black leather this time. Comic-book X-Men, on the big screen, at last.
9. Gambit vs. Shang-Chi is a real fight that happens
Kinetic-charged playing cards versus the Ten Rings. It’s flashy, it’s fun, and it confirms something bigger: the heroes fight each other before they fight Doom. Whether that’s a misunderstanding, a forced trial, or Doom playing puppet master — the trailer won’t say.
10. Yelena vs. Yelena
Blink and you’ll miss it: mid-fight, Mystique shapeshifts into Yelena Belova to fight the real one. Florence Pugh fighting Florence Pugh is exactly the kind of chaos this crossover should be delivering, and we’re grateful.
11. Loki is holding a TVA card
Tom Hiddleston appears in a trench coat holding a TVA card printed with the multiversal tree — the exact image from the Loki season two finale. The God of Stories is still holding the timelines together, which means his role here may be much bigger than a cameo. If the branches are colliding, that’s his tree burning.
12. HERBIE spotting!
The Fantastic Four’s lovable robot assistant HERBIE quietly hovers behind Yelena, Sam, and Pedro Pascal’s Reed Richards in one group shot. Ten points to whoever spotted him on first watch.
13. And then… Steve Rogers grabs Mjölnir
The moment. A bearded Steve Rogers — Chris Evans, back — reaches out and firmly grips Mjölnir as Thor extends it to him. It’s a direct echo of the greatest crowd-pop in MCU history from Endgame, and it quietly kills the popular theory that this Steve would be an evil variant. The hammer doesn’t lie. He’s worthy. He’s our Steve — or close enough.
Who’s suspiciously missing
No Spider-Man in the Avengers: Doomsday trailer — not Tom Holland (busy with Brand New Day, apparently), not Tobey, not Andrew. No Wolverine or Deadpool, despite Deadpool & Wolverine setting them up. No Netflix heroes — not even Daredevil — and no Blade. Either they’re not in the movie… or Marvel is saving its biggest cards for the next trailer. Given that Comic-Con is this Saturday, we wouldn’t bet against a few more “one more thing” moments.
The big theory: Doom isn’t here to destroy the world. He’s here to save it. That’s the problem.
Put the pieces together: incursions are eating universes. Doom warns of an “unthinkable decision.” The heroes are fighting each other, not him. Our read: Doom presents himself as the multiverse’s savior — the one man willing to make the hard call, sacrificing some realities so that others survive. The heroes who refuse become the obstacle. And somewhere along the way, the man who saves the multiverse decides he should also rule it.
One thread the Avengers: Doomsday trailer completely ignores: in the comics, Doom’s defining obsession is his hatred of Reed Richards. Pedro Pascal’s Mister Fantastic is right there. If the movie sidelines that rivalry, it’s leaving Doom’s best material on the table — so expect it to be a bigger deal than this trailer lets on.
The verdict
This Avengers: Doomsday trailer had one job: convince us that a post-Endgame Avengers movie can still feel like an event. Mission accomplished. Doom radiates menace without throwing a single punch (well, except the Stormbreaker flick), the X-Men look pulled straight off a comic page, and the Steve Rogers reveal is the kind of moment theaters were built for.
December 18, 2026 cannot come fast enough. And with Avengers: Secret Wars already dated for December 17, 2027, this is only the opening act.
