Twilight (2008): The Vampire Romance That Started It All

Twilight is where the whole phenomenon begins – a rain-soaked high-school romance that turned a teenage girl and a 100-year-old vampire into a global obsession. Revisiting the 2008 original, it is easy to see why: it is moody, earnest, and unmistakably its own thing.

Welcome to Forks

Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) leaves sunny Phoenix to live with her dad, police chief Charlie, in the perpetually grey town of Forks, Washington. At her new school she is drawn to the pale, aloof Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson), who seems to despise her one day and save her life the next – stopping a skidding van with his bare hand.

The Cold Ones

Bella pieces it together: Edward and his adopted family are vampires. They are “vegetarians” who feed on animals rather than people, but Edward is still dangerous – her blood is almost unbearably tempting to him, and he can read every mind but hers. They fall for each other anyway, and Edward pulls her into the Cullen world of super-speed, sparkling skin, and barely-restrained hunger.

The Hunt

A game of vampire baseball during a thunderstorm goes wrong when three nomad vampires appear. One of them, the tracker James, catches Bella’s scent and decides hunting her will be the perfect game. The Cullens scatter to protect her, but James lures Bella to an old ballet studio by pretending he has her mother.

The Twilight Ending, Explained (Spoilers)

⚠️ Full spoilers for the ending below.

James attacks Bella and bites her hand, and his venom begins to spread – the bite that would turn her into a vampire. Edward arrives just in time, and while the Cullens tear James apart, Edward makes an agonizing choice: he sucks the venom back out of her blood, stopping the transformation without letting his own thirst take over. Bella survives, human and whole.

The film closes at the school prom, Bella in a cast, quietly asking Edward to make her immortal so they can be together forever. He refuses – he will not take her soul. Watching from the shadows is Victoria, James’s mate, whose thirst for revenge sets the whole saga in motion.

The Verdict

The first film is pure mood: fog, longing looks, and that famous blue-grey color wash. The effects are dated and the romance is melodramatic, but there is a sincerity here that the later, glossier entries chase and never quite recapture. This is the one that started it all. 🔥
