Lanterns episode 4 finally lets the two leads work a case together, gets them most of the way to catching the thing hunting Rushville, and then ends with Hal Jordan wrapping a car around a telephone pole with John Stewart still inside it. Episode 4, titled The Weenie, aired Sunday, September 6, 2026 on HBO and HBO Max. Full recap and breakdown below.

What happened in Lanterns episode 4
After the origin-story detour of OutKast, Lanterns episode 4 picks the case back up in 2016 exactly where episode 2 dropped it: Hal standing at Sinestro’s cell, and a 48 hour deadline running on the town. Written by Breannah Gibson and directed by Geeta Vasant Patel, it is the first hour of the season where the mystery actually moves.
The cell. Sinestro will not say how he knows about John Stewart. He will say what John is, and it is not what Hal has been told: not a backup, a replacement. He pushes Hal toward killing him, and when that does not land, he offers the alternative, which is to disgrace John in front of the Guardians by solving the case first. He also hands over the piece of intelligence that cracks the episode. A Manhunter’s heart is the one part it cannot fake. Alive, the flaw is undetectable. Dead, it crystallises.
The weenie. John buys a rifle scope and sits on a water tower watching the Macon ranch, and clocks a helicopter landing in the same spot every day at 9:17 in the morning, at a structure positioned to be visible from everywhere on the property. He calls it a weenie, which is a real architectural term from Walt Disney: the landmark you build so people can always see where to walk next.
The Guardian’s order. Lianna turns up in John’s motel room to tell him Hal broke his oath by visiting Sinestro, and to give an instruction. Next time Hal hands over the ring, say the oath. Claim it. You will be a better Lantern than he is.
John takes the ring, builds an enormous drill with it, and does not say the words.
Underground. He and Hal tunnel into the silo and find no Manhunter, just a stockpile of high-end weaponry built specifically to put down Green Lanterns. On the way in they talk about their fathers and about fear, the closest these two have come to liking each other. Then a pressure mine trips an alarm, Macon’s men take them with weapons that fire darkness, and Will Macon drops his robe and asks John to draw him nude, which is exactly as strange as it sounds. Macon explains his benefactor cured his cancer and made Rushville prosper, and that protecting whoever it is is the price. Sheriff Kerry Kane arrives, makes Macon put his clothes on, and arrests them both.
Zoe. Kane hands John a rifle and tells him Zoe Macon is the one who called her. That night Zoe comes to the motel. They sleep together, she tells him she was the one who saved Will’s life, so Will owes her rather than the other way round, and she says that when she tells him what she knows, everything changes. She does not get to tell him. She walks out, gets into her truck, and a red beam comes down out of orbit and destroys it.
The slaughterhouse. Hal pulls the satellite down out of the sky. It leads to Atlas, a cattle operation whose employees move like they have been switched off, where a portal opens, a cow walks through it and lasers butcher it in one pass. The manager announces he is the Manhunter, puts John’s parents’ address on a screen, threatens to kill them in three minutes, and plays back a recording of John telling Lianna that Hal is old and just keeping the ring warm.
Hal calls the bluff using Sinestro’s tip, and the man folds. He is human. His name is Hector Gutierrez, an engineering student who took alien technology to lift up his community and gave the Manhunter a front to hide behind. Asked who the Manhunter actually is, he says: isn’t it obvious? Will Macon.
The Manhunter reveal in Lanterns episode 4
That answer is a lie, and the way Lanterns episode 4 unpicks it is the best writing the show has done.
Driving away, Hal turns Sinestro’s other lesson over out loud: a Manhunter buries itself in a community by finding the weak point and working it. Then he does the arithmetic on the evening. John’s parents were threatened and John came apart. Zoe was vaporised in front of him an hour earlier and he did not. There is only one reason a man reacts that way to watching someone die, which is that he does not believe she is dead.
Zoe Macon is the Manhunter. The satellite strike was staged, and John has suspected it since before the slaughterhouse. He tells Hal he was not certain, which is true and is also the exact shape of a lie.
Hal pulls over. He tells John to call Antaan and set a meeting at a cafe. Then he opens the door, rolls out, and lets the car go into a telephone pole with John belted into the passenger seat and no ring on his hand.
Gibson, who wrote the episode, has been blunt about why. “He knows that John knows it’s Zoe. And then John lies. That’s it for him. I think that’s the final straw.” And on where Hal’s head is as he walks away from the wreck: “He’s like, ‘Sinestro was right,’ which is a crazy thing for him to ever say.” Her read on the mentor who put it there is the line worth keeping for the rest of the season: “somebody that you used to look up to, that mentored you, has the power to manipulate you and trick you into doing things for their bidding.”
John Stewart and Hal Jordan
Everything the first three hours built gets spent here, and both men are right about each other, which is what makes it work.
Hal is right that John is lying. John has been under orders to take the ring since 2016, he has just been caught on tape calling Hal old, and he sat on the identity of the thing that is about to level a town because he slept with it.
John is right that Hal is not safe to hand power to. Hal broke his oath to go and see Sinestro, he came back carrying Sinestro’s plan, and by the end of Lanterns episode 4 he has decided that the correct response to being lied to is attempted vehicular homicide.
The detail that will matter later: John had the ring in his hand, with a Guardian’s instruction to keep it and a plausible excuse ready, and he gave it back. He built a drill and stayed silent. Whatever the Guardians manufactured him to be, he keeps choosing not to be it, and nobody on either side of him has noticed.
The mystery ledger
Running the case week to week, and Lanterns episode 4 finally moved it:
- What we learned: Zoe Macon is the Manhunter. Hector Hammond is a human called Hector Gutierrez fronting for it in exchange for technology. Will Macon has been protecting it because it cured his cancer and made his town rich, and he does not appear to know what it is. Manhunter hearts crystallise when they die, which is the only reliable test. The silo holds weapons purpose-built for killing Green Lanterns.
- What got murkier: who fired the satellite, and at whom, if Zoe staged her own death. Whether Zoe’s warning to John was the Manhunter working an angle or something closer to real. What Kane knows, given she is the one person who keeps arriving at the right moment. And Antaan’s deadline, which is still running while the two people meant to stop it have stopped speaking.
- Prime suspect right now: answered, and replaced by a better question. Not who, but what Zoe wants. A Manhunter that spent years married to its protector and then chose the trainee is not behaving like a machine following a directive.
DCU and comics connections
The big one in Lanterns episode 4 is a bait and switch. Hector Hammond is a genuine Green Lantern villain, created by John Broome and Gil Kane in 1961, a man exposed to a meteorite that swells his brain into something monstrous. Lanterns episode 4 puts the name on a door, lets comics readers assume they know what is coming, and reveals a frightened engineering student borrowing it.
The Manhunters keep filling out. The show has now given them shapeshifting, infiltration doctrine and a crystallising heart, on top of the Jack Kirby original from 1975. Hal also drops a complaint about a colleague he calls a squirrel, which is Ch’p, the Corps member from H’lven created by Paul Kupperberg and Don Newton in 1982, and the first time this show has been openly silly about the wider Corps.
Fan theory worth flagging as a theory: several reviewers think Sheriff Kerry Kane is Kate Kane, Batwoman, pointing at the surname, the Gotham background, the hair and a reference to a phone call with Gordon. The show has confirmed none of that.

Questions going into episode 5
What is Sinestro’s plan, exactly? Gibson says Hal is leaving that crash to go and implement it, and she has openly teased that Hal may be walking the road toward Parallax, the fall that defines him in the comics.
Does John make the call? Hal told him to bring Antaan’s crew to a cafe. John is concussed, ringless, and the only person alive who knows the Manhunter is Zoe.
What happens to Rushville when the clock runs out? Antaan promised to take the town with him. Nobody is working that problem any more.
Reviews were strong: Collider gave Lanterns episode 4 an 8 out of 10, and But Why Tho went to 9 out of 10 and called it the loudest, craziest and smartest episode so far. Episode 5, titled Lights Out, lands Sunday, September 13 on HBO Max.
