Who is Guy Gardner? In the DCU, he is the Green Lantern the Guardians put in charge of Earth after Hal Jordan fell: loud, smug, bowl-cut, played by Nathan Fillion, and fresh off his Lanterns debut. In the comics, he is the man who could have been Green Lantern instead of Hal, and who has spent more than five decades making everyone around him regret the mix-up. Here is the whole story.
Who is Guy Gardner in the comics?
Guy Gardner was created by writer John Broome and artist Gil Kane, and first appeared in Green Lantern #59 in 1968. His origin is one of the great what-ifs in DC history. When the dying alien Abin Sur sent his ring looking for a worthy successor on Earth, there were two candidates. One was Guy, a schoolteacher from Baltimore. The other was a test pilot named Hal Jordan, and Hal got the ring for one reason: he was closer to the crash site.
That near miss defines him. Guy was marked as Hal’s backup, and after a long run of bad luck he finally got a ring of his own. The version most readers know took shape in the 1980s: brash, abrasive, spoiling for a fight with anyone, his own teammates included.
The moment everyone remembers comes from Justice League #5 in 1987, two issues before the book was renamed Justice League International. Guy picks a fight with Batman, and Batman knocks him out with a single punch. Blue Beetle’s “One punch!” is still the most quoted beat in Guy’s history, and it explains what the character is for: the big mouth who is sometimes right and often flattened.
Later runs gave him more range. He discovered alien Vuldarian heritage and fought for a while as Warrior, and in the 2010s he even went undercover among the rage-fuelled Red Lanterns. Through all of it the core stays the same. Guy is the least polite Green Lantern, and one of the bravest.
Who is Guy Gardner in the DCU?
Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner debuted in James Gunn’s Superman in 2025, as part of the Justice Gang, Maxwell Lord’s corporate-backed superhero team, alongside Hawkgirl, played by Isabela Merced, and Mister Terrific, played by Edi Gathegi. He is the comics version with the volume turned up: brave, rude, and completely unbothered by being the least liked person in any room. Our Superman review covers the film. He turned up again in Peacemaker season 2.
Guy Gardner in Lanterns
Lanterns makes him Earth’s current Green Lantern. In episode 6, set in 2026, the show explains the handover: after Hal Jordan went to prison, the Guardians made Guy a new ring and locked Hal’s away on Oa. Hal and John both write him off as a gym teacher, though Guy insists he was an athletic director. The show also gives him his own energy drink, Electro Punch, sold with the slogan Power. Punch. Repeat., and a line that sums up his relationship with his bosses: “Guardians ever catch wind, I’m on the first beam to the Phantom Zone.”
He met Hal while Hal was in prison, and Hal told him to go climb a rope. He brings Hal’s suit and ring to the funeral, then leaves early because being seen there would be bad optics. He also delivers the news that shapes the rest of the season: someone broke Sinestro out of the Guardians’ prison.
John Stewart, who walked away from the ring ten years earlier, gets the best line about him: “Guy, everything you have is because I didn’t take it.” Our Lanterns episode 6 recap has the full episode.
Nathan Fillion’s Green Lantern history
Fillion is not new to the ring. Before the DCU, he voiced Hal Jordan in DC’s animated films, starting with Green Lantern: Emerald Knights in 2011 and continuing through Justice League: Doom, Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox, Justice League: Throne of Atlantis, The Death of Superman and Reign of the Supermen in 2019. For years, fans fancast him as a live-action Hal Jordan. Gunn, who has worked with Fillion since Slither, gave him Guy instead, and it is hard to argue with the result.
Guy Gardner, Hal Jordan and John Stewart
Three Earth Lanterns, three very different men. Hal is the test pilot the ring picked first. John is the soldier his parents trained for the ring from the age of five, who then walked away from the job. Guy is the one who came second and has never quite forgiven the universe for it, which is exactly why he is so much fun to watch.
