Five and a half years after Robert Pattinson first growled “I’m vengeance,” The Batman Part II is finally, actually happening: cameras have been rolling since June, and the sequel arrives October 2, 2027. What is confirmed about The Batman Part II
The hard facts: Matt Reeves writes and directs again, Robert Pattinson returns, and production began in June 2026, with reports placing at least part of the story in a winter-set Gotham – snow over that gorgeous rain-soaked city. Cinematographer Erik Messerschmidt (Mank, The Killer) replaces Greig Fraser behind the camera. Release: October 2, 2027, per TheWrap’s upcoming-DC rundown.
One thing worth restating for anyone who tuned out during the reshuffle: this is an Elseworlds film – Reeves’ standalone universe, separate from James Gunn’s DCU. Pattinson’s Batman and whoever eventually plays Batman in the DCU proper coexist. Two Gothams, no contradiction.
The rumors: Two-Face rising, Catwoman missing
Now the unconfirmed-but-everywhere tier, clearly labeled as rumor: Sebastian Stan as Harvey Dent, with Scarlett Johansson as his wife Gilda. If true, that is a scream of a direction – Dent’s fall is the best long-arc villain story Gotham has, Stan has spent a decade playing men at war with themselves, and Gilda Dent is straight out of The Long Halloween, the comic Reeves has cited since day one. The first film seeded Gotham’s rot; a district attorney breaking in half fits it perfectly.
The other headline: Zoe Kravitz’s Catwoman is reportedly out. Selina left Gotham at the end of the first film, and it seems the sequel honors that. We have thoughts about how Gotham stories treat its women – we wrote about the Catwoman double standard before – but narratively, a clean Dent-focused sequel is the disciplined choice.
What we do not know yet
No official title beyond Part II. No confirmed villain roster (the Riddler sits in Arkham with a new friend, and that laugh in the deleted scene still hangs over everything). No plot synopsis. And no trailer for a long while – with an October 2027 release, expect the first teaser around spring 2027, likely attached to a big DC or Warner release.
Why it took five years (and why that might be good)
Reeves is a slow, deliberate builder – the gap covered the HBO spinoff The Penguin, a full DC regime change around him, and multiple script passes. The optimistic read: The Batman was the best-reviewed Batman film in a decade partly because nobody rushed it. The winter setting suggests Reeves is chasing a specific mood again rather than a release date.
