Lanterns episode 5 closes out the show’s entire 2016 storyline in a single hour: the Manhunter case gets solved and buried, Rushville burns, Hal Jordan loses the ring, and the man who takes it from him walks away from it before the credits roll. Episode 5, titled Lights Out, aired Sunday, September 13, 2026 on HBO and HBO Max. Full recap and breakdown below.

What happened in Lanterns episode 5
The hour opens nine years earlier, in 2007. Kerry Kane is on the run from Gotham City after her father informs on a crew, and Zoe Macon saves her, even regrowing the pinky finger Kane lost, in exchange for loyalty whenever Zoe decides to collect. It is the debt that has shaped Kane’s ties to the Macon family ever since, and Lanterns episode 5 finally shows the bill.
Back in 2016, Hal walks away from the crash he caused at the end of episode 4, the one that left John trapped in their rental car against a telephone pole. He moves alone: he tells Antaan that Will Macon is the Manhunter, which is a lie, and points the alien hunter at the Macon ranch to buy himself time to go after Zoe.
John survives the wreck, barely. The car catches fire, and Zoe watches him burn rather than pull him out. He wakes in hospital, badly burned, and she is waiting with an offer: she will heal him and protect him if he lets Hal die and helps get the Guardians off her trail. John accepts. A drop of Manhunter blood in his eye and some alien technology later, the burns are gone.
What follows is a town coming apart all at once. Antaan’s forces hit the Macon ranch, and Will Macon, the decoy Hal fed them, does not survive it. Zoe’s orbital strikes start landing across Rushville, killing civilians and draining Hal’s ring every time he throws up a shield. By the end of the night the town is in ruins.
The moment that mattered
Hal and John finally have the fight the whole season has been threatening, a brawl over the ring in Hal’s motel room. John is winning when an orbital strike interrupts, and Hal spends what little energy is left in the ring shielding them both. His question to John as the dust settles: “Was it worth it?”
John does not keep his deal with Zoe. He uses Hal as the bait she wanted, and the moment she is exposed he shoots her in the head. Her heart has crystallised, and John cuts it out as proof she is dead.
Then, at a bar with the Guardian Lianna, he lays out Hal’s ring, the lantern and Zoe’s heart. He finally has the ring he was raised to take, and he quits within moments of getting it: “I spent a lot of my life imagining what it would feel like to wear this. Pride, gratitude, power? But when I put it on… I just felt empty.” He leaves the ring on the bar.

Every version of this relationship the show has offered so far, mentor and replacement, partner and rival, gets tested in Lanterns episode 5, and none of it survives intact. Hal traps John in a car as payback and still spends his last charge shielding him. John takes Zoe’s deal to survive, then breaks it the moment it matters. And the ring he was raised from childhood to inherit turns out to be something he does not want once it is actually on his hand.
John’s verdict on his mentor is the line that defines the hour: “Hal betrayed everything to keep this ring. His code, the oath, even himself, and it broke him.” Neither man ends the night as a Green Lantern.
The mystery ledger
Running the case week to week, Lanterns episode 5 closes the book on the question that opened the season while leaving the bigger one untouched:
- What we learned: Zoe Macon really was the Manhunter. She is dead, and her heart is with the Guardians as proof.
- What got murkier: Earth’s ring sits unclaimed. John walked away from it on purpose, and the episode does not say who the Guardians send next.
- Prime suspect right now: the show’s central mystery was never Zoe. It is who kills Hal Jordan in 2026, and episode 5 spends its whole runtime in 2016 without moving that question at all.
DCU and comics connections
In the comics, the Manhunters were the Guardians’ first attempt at policing the universe: androids built long before the Green Lantern Corps, decommissioned after they rebelled against their creators. That failure is the reason the Guardians handed the job to living beings with wills of their own, and it gives Zoe’s crystallised heart and her Manhunter blood a long history to draw on.
The bigger tease is what an unclaimed ring means for the wider DCU. With John declining the job, the door is open for Guy Gardner, who already wears a ring in Superman. Guy Gardner watch, five episodes in: still no Nathan Fillion on screen, but the show just wrote him an opening.
Questions going into episode 6
Who reaches for the ring? Both leads have now lost it or refused it, and the Guardians are not the type to leave a sector empty.
What happens to Hal? He ends the night without a ring, in a town his war helped destroy, and somebody is going to be held responsible for Rushville.
How does Hal end up on those bleachers? With the 2016 case closed, the question the show opened on is the only one left: how Hal Jordan ends up dead ten years later.
Critics were close to unanimous: Lanterns episode 5 holds 100 percent on Rotten Tomatoes across eight reviews. IndieWire gave it an A and called it the series’ most thrilling hour yet, and IGN went to 9 out of 10.
