Who Dies in Avengers: Doomsday? Every Death Prediction, Ranked

Working out who dies in Doomsday is the parlour game of the year, and most of the internet is playing it with a leaked plot summary nobody has verified. We are not doing that. What follows is built only on things Marvel has actually put in public: the trailers, the cast billing order, the actors’ own farewells and the shape of a two-part story. Ranked from near-certain to wishful.

Near certain

Professor X. Patrick Stewart is 84 and this is the send-off. Every version of this story needs the man who spent his life arguing that two peoples can share a world to die proving it, and a multiversal collapse gives him the largest possible stage to do it on. If you are betting on one name for who dies in Doomsday, bet this one.

Magneto. Ian McKellen is 85. Xavier and Lehnsherr have never worked as separate propositions, and the films have spent 26 years building to a version of them standing together. Marvel did not bring both actors back at these ages to have one of them survive the other by a sequel.

Likely

Steve Rogers. The billing order is the tell. Marvel listed Chris Evans second, above Chris Hemsworth, behind only Robert Downey Jr. as Doom. That is not cameo positioning, and it comes with a personal teaser from December 2025.

Then there is the causal argument. If the incursions trace back to Steve staying in the past, and that theory has more support than most, then the story has a debt with his name on it. We laid the case out in the Peggy Carter theory. Second billing plus narrative responsibility is how a film sets up a death, not a retirement.

Thor. Call it 60/40. The evidence for: the first trailer shows him praying before the battle, then losing to Doom badly enough that Stormbreaker gets caught between two fingers, and Chris Hemsworth put out a Legacy of Thor video that a lot of people read as a goodbye. The evidence against: he is third-billed, Secret Wars is a year away, and it makes more sense to spend him there. Full argument in does Thor die in Doomsday.

At least one more Fox mutant. Xavier and Magneto dying of old-guard symbolism is one thing. For the incursion to feel dangerous, the film needs to take someone the audience did not have on the list.

Possible

Loki. Not a fight loss. The recurring theory is that Doom needs what Loki holds, and the God of Stories sitting at the centre of the multiverse is a power source before he is a combatant. That is a different kind of death and it may not stick, given this would be his third. Our full case is in does Doom kill Loki.

Ant-Man. Paul Rudd is fifth-billed and the trailer gives Scott and Cassie Lang a father and daughter thread. Marvel does not build that scaffolding for a character who walks away unharmed.

Johnny Storm. Prime fake-out material. He is the one holding Franklin while the light goes up, which is either a death scene or a rescue depending on which way the film turns it.

Who survives

The consensus survivor list is short and revealing: Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Franklin Richards, Sam Wilson, Shuri, Cyclops and Doom himself.

Look at what that group has in common. Four of them are Fantastic Four, and the fifth is the child at the centre of Doom’s plan. Sam Wilson is the sitting Captain America with a franchise to lead. Shuri is Marvel’s bench for the next decade. These are the people the studio still needs in 2027, which is the least romantic and most reliable way to predict who dies in Doomsday.

The uncomfortable possibility

Everything above assumes Doomsday ends with heroes standing. It might not.

This is half a story. Infinity War is the model, and the reason that film worked is that the villain won outright and the audience walked out winded. Reports since August have described a Doomsday ending far darker than a normal blockbuster would attempt, with the final incursion going through and very little left. If the film commits to that, then the question of who dies in Doomsday stops being a list and becomes a number.

Two things argue against it. Tickets have been on sale since July against a December 18 date, and a Christmas release that ends in total defeat is a difficult thing to sell to families twice in one decade. Whether the Avengers might choose that outcome deliberately is the argument in do the Avengers lose on purpose.

Our call on who dies in Doomsday

Xavier and Magneto die, and the film treats both as the end of an era rather than shocks. Steve Rogers dies, and it is the emotional centre of the picture. Thor survives Doomsday to die properly in Secret Wars. Loki is spent rather than killed. And Doom is still standing when the credits roll, because he has to be. If that is right, then who dies in Doomsday is really a question about what Marvel is willing to retire. The answer looks like the Fox era and the last of the original six, which is a lot of history to clear in one film, and exactly the kind of clearing a reboot needs.

Avengers: Doomsday is in cinemas on December 18, 2026. Secret Wars follows on December 17, 2027.
