Loki quotes have a head start on almost every other character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Tom Hiddleston has been delivering them since 2011, across three Thor films, three Avengers films and two seasons of his own series, and the character was written to talk his way into and out of everything. Here are the ten lines that define him, ranked by how hard they still land.
There is extra weight on these Loki quotes now. Hiddleston is back in Avengers: Doomsday this December, and Endgame Encore has already put him on a doorstep nobody expected. Read the list with that in mind.
10. “Kneel before me.”
The Avengers (2012)
Stuttgart, a crowd of civilians forced to their knees, and Loki at his most theatrical, lecturing them about how people secretly crave to be ruled. Then one old man stands up and refuses. Loki’s answer, “There are no men like me”, is the whole character in six words: grandeur, and the fear that nobody will take it seriously.
9. “I am a god, you dull creature”
The Avengers (2012)
The funniest ending to a villain monologue in the MCU. Loki gets as far as telling the Hulk he will not be bullied, and the Hulk picks him up by the leg and slams him into the floor like a rag doll. “Puny god,” says the Hulk, and Loki, flat on his back in the rubble, has nothing left to say.
8. “I have an army.”
The Avengers (2012)
Loki’s threat to Tony Stark at Stark Tower, delivered with total confidence. Tony’s reply, “We have a Hulk”, is the reason this makes the list. It is the moment the film tells you the Avengers are going to be fine, and one of the rare Loki quotes where he does not get the last word.
7. “It’s humiliating.”
Thor: Ragnarok (2017)
Thor wants to run Get Help, a routine the brothers have clearly run before. Loki says he hates it. Thor says it works every time. Loki says it is humiliating. Then Thor hurls his limp brother at a pack of guards, and it works. Ragnarok turned Loki from a tragic villain into half of a double act, and this is the scene that sold it.
6. “Your savior is here!”
Thor: Ragnarok (2017)
Loki arrives at the Rainbow Bridge with a ship big enough to carry Asgard’s survivors, and he announces himself accordingly. It is Loki choosing his family over himself, out loud, and he still cannot resist turning it into an entrance.
5. “I never wanted the throne. I only ever wanted to be your equal.”
Thor (2011)
The first of the great Loki quotes, and the one that made him more than a villain. Mid-fight on the Bifrost, Loki tells Thor the truth the whole franchise will spend the next decade circling. Minutes later, dangling over the void and begging his father to see that he did it all “for you, for all of us”, he hears Odin’s quiet “No, Loki” and lets go.
4. “I assure you, brother, the sun will shine on us again.”
Avengers: Infinity War (2018)
The opening minutes of Infinity War, on a ship full of dead Asgardians. Loki says it to Thor, and Thanos answers, “Your optimism is misplaced.” It sounds like hope. In hindsight it is a goodbye.
3. “You will never be a god.”
Avengers: Infinity War (2018)
His last words in the Infinity Saga. Loki pledges himself to Thanos with his full list of titles and his “undying fidelity”, goes for the throat with a hidden knife, fails, and spends his final breath on an insult. Of all the Loki quotes, this is the one where he stops performing. Every other line on this list is about wanting something. This one is about knowing exactly who he is.
2. “I am burdened with glorious purpose.”
The Avengers (2012)
Loki’s introduction as a full-scale MCU villain, straight out of the Tesseract portal and straight into a grand statement. It stuck so hard that Marvel named the first episode of his series after it, and the whole show is the slow discovery that his purpose was never the one he meant.
1. “I know what kind of god I need to be. For you. For all of us.”
Loki, season 2 (2023)
The best of the Loki quotes closes the arc that number 5 opened. The god who once cried “for you, for all of us” at his father while hanging off the Bifrost says the same words again, this time as a promise instead of a plea. Then he walks out to hold every timeline together, alone, on a throne he never wanted. The purpose turns out to be glorious after all. It just is not about him.
Bonus: the newest line
Avengers: Endgame Encore (2026)
“No, but I can help you, both of you.” Loki, answering Peggy Carter at the door of the home she shares with Steve Rogers, in one of the new scenes Endgame Encore added. Nobody knows yet what he is offering. Here is every new Encore scene, explained.
