Loki gets maybe four seconds of the Avengers: Doomsday trailer, and the fandom has extracted roughly four hundred theories from them. Fair enough – no character enters this movie with more cosmic baggage. When we last saw him, he wasn’t a trickster or even a hero: he was the God of Stories, sitting alone at the center of the multiverse, physically holding every timeline together. So the biggest question about Loki in Doomsday isn’t what he does in the film. It’s simpler and scarier: why isn’t he on his throne?
Loki in Doomsday: what the trailer actually shows
Three details, each doing a lot of work. One: Loki wears a TVA uniform – the suit-and-tie field look, not the green robes of his season 2 ascension. Two: he holds a TVA card with his own face on it, and the back of the card carries the Yggdrasil design – the multiversal tree he himself created. Three, and this is the one that broke the theorists: he’s standing in what appears to be the same house where Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter danced at the end of Endgame.

Theory #1: Loki personally recruited Steve Rogers
Connect detail three to the trailer’s biggest crowd-pop. The theory, which ScreenRant argues the trailer all but confirms: Steve’s retirement with Peggy created a branched timeline – an anomaly the old TVA would have pruned. Loki’s kinder multiverse doesn’t prune people. It hires them. The God of Stories walked into a 1950s living room, hat in hand, and asked Captain America to come back one more time. It reframes Steve’s return completely – he wasn’t found, he was chosen. (Whether the man who answered the door is entirely trustworthy is a whole other conversation.)
Theory #2: Loki runs the TVA now
His face is literally on the business card. The reading: after season 2, the TVA reorganized around its new god – not as He Who Remains 2.0 ruling by fear, but as an institution with Loki as its guiding authority. The uniform isn’t a downgrade from his robes; it’s a choice. The god who once demanded a throne in Avengers now wears a company suit and does field work. Fifteen years of character development in one costume decision.
Theory #3: the throne is empty – and that should terrify you
Here’s the theory we can’t shake. Loki’s entire season 2 sacrifice was becoming infrastructure: he sits at the loom, he holds the branches, the multiverse lives. If Loki in Doomsday is walking around making house calls, one of two things is true. Either he found a way to delegate the job – or the job is failing. Look at the movie around him: incursions everywhere, three Earths colliding, branches dying. That’s not a multiverse with a healthy god at its center; that’s a tree burning while its gardener runs for help. And remember – one popular read of Doom’s plan has him collecting the tools to reshape reality itself. To a man like that, Loki’s tree isn’t an obstacle. It’s materials.
Theory #4: which Loki is this, anyway?
The fandom’s tinfoil corner notes that a TVA uniform could mean a pre-throne Loki variant – and Marvel has edited trailers to mislead before. But the Yggdrasil card is hard to argue with: the tree only exists because post-finale Loki made it. Our read: this is our Loki, after the throne. The darker fork – that “Loki” is someone wearing his face (a shapeshifter’s trick works both ways) – stays on the board until the movie kills it.
The reunion nobody is emotionally ready for
Thor is in this movie. Loki is in this movie. Thor watched a version of his brother die in Infinity War and never learned that another one grew up, saved the multiverse, and took the loneliest job in creation. If the movie gives them one scene, it rewrites both arcs – and if the theory that Thor doesn’t survive Doomsday is right, then the God of Stories may have come down from his throne just in time to lose the person he did it all for. Marvel would absolutely do this to us.
The endgame: the God of Stories writes the ending
Zoom out and every theory points one direction. In the comics, God of Stories Loki is the one who understands that endings are just stories deciding what they mean. If the heroes lose Doomsday and Doom builds his patchwork world, somebody has to remember what reality used to be – and somebody has to write what comes after Secret Wars. Our bet: the saga doesn’t end with a punch. It ends with a storyteller. And Marvel has spent fifteen years making sure we know exactly which one.
