The Clayface release date has moved. Warner Bros. has shifted DC’s body-horror experiment from September 11 to October 23, 2026, dropping it squarely into the Halloween corridor. That is not a retreat. For a film openly described as the DCU’s first venture into unsettling body horror, late October is where it always belonged.
Clayface release date and why it changed
The film was originally dated September 11, 2026, and now opens October 23. The read is straightforward: an R-rated horror movie about a man dissolving into living clay is a Halloween release, and September was leaving money on the table.
The Clayface release date change also makes 2026 the DCU’s first two-movie year, following Supergirl earlier in the summer.
The story
Matt Hagen is a rising movie star. He is brutally disfigured, and he volunteers as a test subject for a procedure that promises to restore his face. It works, briefly. Then the side effects arrive, and his body starts becoming living clay.
The reference point everyone involved keeps pointing at is The Fly, David Cronenberg’s 1986 film, and that is the right frame. This is a tragedy about a body betraying its owner, not a caper about a shapeshifting bank robber. Reports consistently describe it as horror-leaning and free of camp.
Cast
Tom Rhys Harries plays Matt Hagen, in the kind of casting that either makes a career or vanishes. Naomi Ackie is Dr. Caitlin Corr, a fringe scientist and Hagen’s love interest. Max Minghella plays John Borelli, a Gotham City detective who is dating Corr, which is a tidy little triangle to build a horror film on. Eddie Marsan and David Dencik round out the principals.
The names behind it are the story
James Watkins directs, from an original story by Mike Flanagan with a screenplay rewrite by Hossein Amini.
Flanagan is the most interesting name in the building. He is the writer behind the modern era’s most emotionally serious horror television, and the fact that DC handed a Batman villain to him rather than to a franchise architect says a lot about what Gunn is attempting. Watkins comes from Eden Lake and The Woman in Black, so nobody here is a stranger to genuinely unpleasant filmmaking.
On the producing side: Matt Reeves alongside James Gunn, Peter Safran, and Lynn Harris. Reeves being attached is notable given he is simultaneously making The Batman Part II in a separate continuity.
Where it sits in the DCU
Clayface is the third film in Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, and the timeline placement is specific: it is set before Superman (2025), but after the events of Creature Commandos.
It was made for roughly 40 million dollars, filmed between August and November 2025 in Liverpool and at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden under the working title Corinthians, and it is intended to carry an R rating. A teaser landed in April 2026 with a fuller trailer following in July.
Why this is the most interesting thing DC is doing
Gunn’s stated pitch for the DCU was that it would not run one house style, and this is the sharpest evidence yet that he meant it. A 40 million dollar R-rated body horror film about a C-list Batman villain is not a franchise-building move. It is a bet that the DC library is deep enough to support genre films that happen to share a universe.
If it works, the model is enormously valuable, because it is cheap, it is repeatable, and it makes the shared universe feel like a place rather than a product line. If it does not, it cost less than a single act of most superhero films.
Either way, the new Clayface release date of October 23 is now one of the more interesting dates on the calendar. We will have a full review at release.
