Dexter Resurrection Season 2 Episode 1 Review: A Slow Start, and a Midlife Crisis That Misses

Dexter Resurrection season 2 is here, and the premiere, “Risky Business”, hands Dexter Morgan a midlife crisis. It streamed on Paramount+ on October 30, 2026. Our verdict: 8 out of 10. It is good to have Michael C. Hall back, but it is a slow start, and the crisis the season is built on does not work for us.

Spoiler warning: this review covers the whole of season 2, episode 1.

Dexter Resurrection season 2, episode 1: what happens

The season jumps ahead three years from the season 1 finale. Dexter is still driving for a ride-share app and still renting from Blessing. He has spent those years hunting the killers who escaped Leon Prater’s vault, and he has already taken out two of them, the Midnight Mangler and the Yonkers Slayer.

Harrison has finished the police academy and is about to join the NYPD. Father and son are closer than ever, close enough to share their phone locations, and Dexter promises to be at the graduation.

He does not make it. When Al Walker, the Rapunzel killer, resurfaces with a new victim, Dexter drives out of state to finish him. The kill goes badly. Al nearly beats him, and Dexter only just gets the upper hand. He misses the graduation, and Harrison hides his disappointment and goes out with his fellow graduates instead.

Meanwhile, New York has two new killers:

  • The New York Ripper: Brian Cox plays Don Framt, an old man Detective Wallace has chased for 23 years and interrogated nine times without enough evidence to charge him.
  • The Five Borough Killer: Dan Stevens plays a new killer who phones the police to warn them, shoots a woman outside a rained-out baseball game, then shares the video with strangers. One borough down, four to go.

The episode ends with Joey Quinn arriving from Miami Metro to talk to Wallace, which cannot be good news for the Bay Harbor Butcher.

Dexter’s midlife crisis, explained

The midlife crisis is the spine of Dexter Resurrection season 2. Dexter is in his 50s, he is slower than he used to be, and he struggles physically with a killer he once would have handled easily. The bigger change is in his head: after 35 years of quietly removing killers, he wants someone to know.

Michael C. Hall told TVLine that “the symptom of his midlife crisis is a desire for recognition,” and admitted it is “a dicey proposition for someone whose primary role is not to get caught.” That is the engine of the season. A Dexter who wants credit takes risks the old Dexter never would.

What the critics say

Most critics like the new direction. Dexter Resurrection season 2 sits at 86% on Rotten Tomatoes from its early reviews, which were based on the first two episodes. That is down from 95% for season 1. Screen Rant called it “devilishly delightful”, and Collider enjoyed watching Dexter deal with the indignities of old age. Ready Steady Cut was cooler and called the premiere “a scene-setter, in every respect”.

Our take: why Dexter’s midlife crisis does not work

It was good to see Dexter back, and Michael C. Hall slips straight back into the role. But this was a slow start compared to season 1 of Resurrection, and season 1 was better.

What does not work for us is Dexter wanting credit for his kills. The whole character was built on staying hidden: the Code, the careful planning, the mask of the normal guy. A Dexter who wants applause feels like a different person, and it is the part of the premiere that pulls us out. Hall himself calls it dicey, and that is exactly the problem.

Still, it is Dexter. The premiere gets an 8 out of 10 from us, and as Dexter fans we are watching every week. Here is hoping it picks up as the season goes on.

What episode 2 needs to answer

  • When does Dexter cross paths with the Five Borough Killer, who looks like a younger, colder version of him?
  • What has Joey Quinn brought from Miami, and how close does it put Wallace to the Bay Harbor Butcher?
  • How long can Wallace leave Don Framt walking free?
  • Does Harrison forgive his father for missing the graduation?
