The Terminal List Season 1 Recap and Ending Explained: Who Was the Tenth Name?

The Terminal List season 1 recap, short version: Navy SEAL James Reece (Chris Pratt) comes home from an ambush that wiped out his platoon, finds his wife and daughter murdered, and learns that the people who sent his men to die are the same people who covered it up. He writes their names on the back of his daughter’s drawing and works through them one by one. The last name is the one he never saw coming.

All eight episodes arrived on Prime Video at once on July 1, 2022. The show is based on Jack Carr’s 2018 novel of the same name, and season 2 dropped on October 21, 2026, so this is the catch-up before you start it.

Spoiler warning: this Terminal List season 1 recap covers every episode, including the finale and the tenth name on the list.

The official The Terminal List trailer, from Prime Video’s YouTube channel.

The setup

Lieutenant Commander James Reece leads a SEAL platoon sent into Syria after Dr. Kahani, a chemical weapons expert. It is a trap. The ambush kills everyone except Reece and his friend Ernest “Boozer” Vickers.

Back home in California, Reece has headaches, gaps in his memory and flashbacks that do not line up. Then Boozer is found dead in what looks like a suicide. Reece slips out at night for an MRI, is attacked with his own gun (one that had been locked in his home safe), and comes home to find his wife Lauren (Riley Keough) and daughter Lucy (Arlo Mertz) dead.

Nobody believes the official story less than Reece. Two people help him: his old friend Ben Edwards (Taylor Kitsch), a CIA officer, and Katie Buranek (Constance Wu), a journalist who smells a cover-up.

The Terminal List season 1 recap, episode by episode

Episodes 1 and 2: the list begins

Katie tells Reece that NCIS agent Josh Holder found no evidence clearing him. Reece writes Holder’s name on the back of Lucy’s family drawing, and that drawing becomes the terminal list. With Ben’s help he gets into Holder’s files, then confronts him at home. Holder admits a vice president at the defense firm Capstone Industries bribed him to bury the case. Reece kills him.

Episodes 3 and 4: Capstone and the drug

Name two is that Capstone vice president, Saul Agnon. Katie passes on news from the clinic: Reece has a tumor in his head. At a party at Agnon’s house, Reece gets three things out of him before poisoning him: Capstone CEO Steve Horn (Jai Courtney), a project called RD4895, and a lawyer named Marcus Boykin, who allegedly hired the cartel gunmen that killed Reece’s family.

Reece takes out Boykin with a long-range sniper shot in the Wyoming backcountry. Then he finds Navajas, the man who led those gunmen, kills his crew and leaves him to die. Meanwhile Katie starts to suspect that the whole platoon had tumors, not just Reece.

Episode 5: what RD4895 really was

Katie learns that RD4895 was an experimental PTSD drug meant to stop traumatic memories from forming. Horn had shut the trial down, but the drug looks to have been tested on Reece’s platoon in secret. Ben gives Reece three more names from the Navy side: Rear Admiral Gerald Pillar, Captain Leonard Howard and Commander Bill Cox. Reece ambushes Horn with an explosive charge outside Capstone, killing him and his bodyguards.

Episodes 6 and 7: the FBI closes in

FBI agents Tony Layun (J. D. Pardo) and Mac Wilson (Christina Vidal) are hunting Reece. He gets a clean shot at Layun and lets him live, then saves Wilson after a mudslide he triggered buries them both. Neither choice is lost on them later.

Katie gives the FBI a capitalization table, a record of who made money from the scheme, and it points at Pillar, Howard and Cox. Reece drowns Cox in the Pacific. Ben kidnaps Howard and his family, and Reece forces Howard to wear a vest of claymore mines and walk up to Pillar. Both die. Layun learns that the Department of Defense, under Secretary Lorraine Hartley (Jeanne Tripplehorn), authorized RD4895 without FDA approval. Katie’s story is ready to go, but before it can, Hartley finds her and offers an interview.

The Terminal List season 1 recap: the ending explained

The finale answers the big question first. Hartley ordered the Syria mission and signed off on RD4895. In the interview, Katie gets her to admit she knew the SEALs had tumors and let them be killed in Syria to make the problem disappear. Hartley is name nine.

Reece and Ben fight through the Talos security contractors Hartley hired to kill him, and Reece reaches her safe room. Katie begs him to spare her. He does not get the chance either way: Hartley takes her own life before he can. Layun, who now knows Reece was betrayed and hunted for the wrong reasons, lets him walk.

Then comes the tenth name. With Katie’s help, Reece traces the money and finds Ben Edwards at the end of it. On Ben’s boat, Ben admits he was part of the Syria mission but tearfully denies any role in the deaths of Lauren and Lucy. He says he helped Reece out of guilt. He asks Reece to finish the list, and Reece kills his best friend.

In the last scene, Reece finally remembers clearly a conversation his family had about the chance that he might not come home. He looks at the list one last time, turns it over to Lucy’s drawing, and lets the wind carry it into the ocean. An old SEAL friend, Raife Hastings, has left him a boat and gear with a note saying they are now even, and Reece sets sail for Mozambique.

What the ending means

The whole season is about memory. RD4895 was built to stop memories from forming, and it is why Reece cannot trust his own head for most of the season. When the list is done, the memory of his family comes back whole, and that is what lets him let go of the drawing. He is free, but he is not fixed: he is still a wanted man, and nothing in season 1 treats the tumor.

  • Navajas, who led the gunmen (episode 4)

Critics hated it, viewers loved it

Any honest Terminal List season 1 recap has to mention the split, because few shows divide people like this one. On Rotten Tomatoes, season 1 sits at 42% with critics and 94% with audiences as of October 2026. TVLine’s Dave Nemetz panned it, and Metacritic lands at 40. Jack Carr’s answer to the reviews, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter, was blunt: “We didn’t make it for the critics.”

Viewers made it a hit anyway. It became the No. 1 show on Prime Video’s Top 10 within two weeks, and it debuted at No. 3 on Nielsen’s US streaming chart with 1.1 billion minutes viewed. TV Guide put it in the same box as Reacher and Jack Ryan: Prime Video’s straightforward action thrillers, built to entertain rather than win awards. If you liked our Reacher season 1 recap, this is the same lane, just much darker. Reacher solves crimes with a grin; Reece is grieving the whole way through.

That is the Terminal List season 1 recap done. We are watching the series now, and our own verdict will come with the season 2 post.

What comes after season 1

Dark Wolf (2025). The Terminal List: Dark Wolf is a prequel about Ben Edwards before the events of season 1, with Taylor Kitsch back in the lead and Chris Pratt returning as Reece. It premiered on August 27, 2025.

Season 2 (2026). All eight episodes came out on October 21, 2026. It adapts Carr’s second novel, True Believer, and picks up with Reece still on the run. Constance Wu returns as Katie, and Tom Hopper joins the main cast as Raife Hastings, the friend who left Reece that boat. New faces include Dar Salim, Luke Hemsworth, Gabriel Luna and Olga Kurylenko.

Season 3. Not announced yet. Carr’s next book, Savage Son, is the obvious source if Prime Video renews it.
