Reacher Season 1 Recap and Ending Explained: Who Killed Joe?

Reacher season 1 recap, short version: Jack Reacher (Alan Ritchson) drifts into Margrave, Georgia, is arrested for murder before he can eat his peach pie, discovers that one of the victims is his own brother, and leaves the town’s counterfeiting racket in ashes. The season adapts Killing Floor, Lee Child’s 1997 debut novel.

All eight episodes, premiere and finale included, arrived on Prime Video at once on February 4, 2022.

Spoiler warning: this Reacher season 1 recap covers every episode, including the finale and who killed Joe.

The setup

Reacher is an Army veteran turned drifter who stops in Margrave on a whim, curious about the blues musician Blind Blake. Instead, he is arrested for murder at the town diner.

Chief Detective Oscar Finlay (Malcolm Goodwin), a Boston transplant, runs the interrogation. Officer Roscoe Conklin (Willa Fitzgerald) becomes Reacher’s first real ally in town.

Then a local family man, Paul Hubble (Marc Bendavid), falsely confesses to the killing. Both men are sent to prison, where Reacher fights off an attempt on their lives. The worst news comes at the morgue, where Reacher identifies one of the victims as his older brother, Joe (Christopher Russell).

The opposition is the Kliner family, whose foundation props up Margrave’s economy: Kliner Sr. (Currie Graham) and his ruthless son KJ (Chris Webster). Mayor Grover Teale (Bruce McGill) is on their payroll, and so are some of the town’s police.

Reacher season 1 recap, episode by episode

This Reacher season 1 recap takes the story in three stretches. The finale gets its own section below.

Episodes 2 and 3: Joe’s secret

Back in Margrave, Reacher teams up with Roscoe while Hubble disappears. Chief Morrison and his wife are murdered, and Mayor Teale installs himself as acting police chief.

Molly Beth Gordon (Lara Jean Chorostecki), Joe’s contact, explains why he was in town: he was working undercover for the Secret Service, investigating counterfeiting.

Episodes 4 to 6: backup arrives

Reacher and Roscoe’s partnership turns romantic. Molly Beth is murdered, and Reacher calls in backup in the form of Frances Neagley (Maria Sten).

Kliner Sr. is found murdered, and hired killers keep coming, many of them sent by the Kliners’ partners in Venezuela. In a quieter moment, Finlay reveals that his wife died.

Episode 7: the money trail

Officer Stevenson and his wife are brutally murdered, and Officer Baker (Hugh Thompson) is exposed as the Kliners’ man inside the station.

Reacher finally cracks the scheme. The Kliners bleach genuine $1 bills, reprint them as $100s, hide the chemical waste in animal feed and ship the fakes to Venezuela.

Then comes the season’s big betrayal: Picard (Martin Roach), Finlay’s FBI colleague, is in on it with Teale and KJ.

Reacher season 1 recap: the ending explained

The finale opens with KJ in control. He admits to a string of murders, including Joe’s and his own father’s, and he is holding Roscoe, Charlie Hubble (Kristin Kreuk) and her daughters hostage. His price for their lives is Hubble, so he sends Reacher to find him, with Picard riding along.

Reacher turns the tables on Picard, finds Hubble and crashes a truck into the police station to free Finlay, killing Baker. Then Reacher, Finlay, Neagley and Hubble storm KJ’s warehouse and set it on fire.

Each villain gets a fitting end. Finlay crushes Picard in a hydraulic press, and Roscoe kills Teale. Reacher saves KJ for himself: he soaks him in the bill-washing chemicals, then kicks him into the fire. The Hubbles are reunited as the operation burns.

That settles the question at the heart of any Reacher season 1 recap: who killed Joe? KJ pulled the trigger. Dawson Kliner beat the body afterwards, and Chief Morrison, who was taking Kliner money too, tried to hide it. Joe was killed because he was investigating the scheme for the Secret Service.

The coda is quieter. Reacher finally gets his peach pie at the diner with Finlay, passing a customer played by Lee Child on the way in, and his verdict, per TVLine, is “I’ve had better.” Finlay is quitting the force and heading back to Boston, and Reacher suggests Roscoe run for mayor.

A flashback shows the brothers with their dying mother, who gives Reacher their grandfather’s French war medal. Before leaving, he buries it where Joe was killed, then hitchhikes out of town.

Why not stay? GameRant notes that Reacher expects the fallout to tie him to Margrave for at least two years, and he would rather keep moving.

Here is where this Reacher season 1 recap leaves the main players:

Character Where season 1 leaves them
Jack Reacher Buries the medal and hitchhikes out of town
Oscar Finlay Quits the force and heads back to Boston
Roscoe Conklin Weighing Reacher’s suggestion that she run for mayor
Frances Neagley Fights beside Reacher at the warehouse
Paul Hubble Reunited with Charlie and their daughters
KJ Kliner Killed by Reacher in the warehouse fire
Kliner Sr. Murdered by his son, KJ
Mayor Grover Teale Killed by Roscoe
Picard Crushed in a hydraulic press by Finlay
Officer Baker Killed when Reacher crashes a truck into the station

Neagley is the ally built to last: ScreenRant says the show added her to set up a recurring character. Roscoe’s and Finlay’s futures are left open.

The book vs the show

Collider’s review called the story “largely faithful to Child’s work”, and the main beats of this Reacher season 1 recap come from the novel. The changes are mostly in who does what.

  • A wider lens. The book is narrated by Reacher in the first person, while the show also follows Finlay and Roscoe on their own. Showrunner Nick Santora told SYFY Wire the team had to make Reacher “a touch more verbal”, because on the page so much of his thinking never becomes dialogue.
  • Neagley joins early. She is not in Killing Floor; her first book appearance is Without Fail in 2002.
  • A reshuffled finale. In the novel, Reacher kills Kliner’s son in an ambush before the final act (ScreenRant says he drowns him in a swimming pool). Wikipedia’s synopsis of the book has Reacher shoot Teale and Kliner Sr. at the warehouse and kill Picard with Finlay’s help. The show makes KJ the final villain, has him murder his father and hands Teale to Roscoe and Picard to Finlay.
  • Stevenson dies. ScreenRant points out that Officer Stevenson survives the novel, while the show has him and his wife murdered.
  • More family history. Flashbacks to Reacher’s bond with Joe and to their mother’s deathbed fill in his past, partly borrowing from details teased in later novels, according to ScreenRant.
  • A first name for Roscoe. In the book, Roscoe is her surname; the show makes it her first name, ScreenRant notes.

Our take

Season 1 is still the show’s best mystery. A personal motive, a closed town and a sharp central trio give it a shape the later seasons have not quite matched, with Malcolm Goodwin’s dry Finlay the standout. The middle episodes lean too hard on disposable hired killers, though, and KJ is more sneer than menace.

Critics have scored every later season higher on Rotten Tomatoes, but as of October 3, 2026, season 1 holds the series’ best audience score: 91%, against 77%, 74% and 64% for seasons 2 to 4. We rank it first of the four.
