Reacher Season 3 Recap and Ending Explained: Who Dies in the Finale

Reacher season 3 recap, short version: Jack Reacher (Alan Ritchson) goes undercover inside Zachary Beck’s rug business in Maine, helping a DEA agent search for a missing young woman while he hunts the man who murdered his old partner. The eight-episode season adapts Persuader, Lee Child’s seventh Jack Reacher novel, published in 2003.

It ran on Prime Video from February 20 to March 27, 2025, with three episodes on launch day and then one a week until the finale, “Unfinished Business”.

Spoiler warning: this Reacher season 3 recap covers all eight episodes, including who dies in the finale.

The setup

The first thing any Reacher season 3 recap has to explain is that the opening is a con. Reacher foils an apparent kidnapping of Richard Beck (Johnny Berchtold) and seems to shoot a police officer by accident in the chaos. Both are staged: Reacher is working with DEA agent Susan Duffy (Sonya Cassidy) and her team, and the stunt is his way into the Beck house.

Publicly, Richard’s father, Zachary Beck (Anthony Michael Hall), is a wealthy rug importer. Duffy’s team suspects drug smuggling, and Teresa, the young woman Duffy sent undercover into his business, has vanished.

Reacher has his own reason to say yes. Beck is tied to Francis Xavier Quinn (Brian Tee), a former military intelligence officer whom Reacher shot years ago and believed was dead.

Standing in his way are Beck’s head of security, Chapman Duke, and his bodyguard Paulie, played by Olivier Richters, who stands 7ft 2in. For once, Reacher is not the biggest man in the room.

Reacher season 3 recap: the plot, episode by episode

Episodes 1 to 3: getting inside. Richard, it turns out, lost part of an ear in an earlier kidnapping. Beck takes Reacher on as one of his men, and Reacher calls in his old friend Frances Neagley (Maria Sten) to look into Beck’s associates.

When a man named Angel Doll grows suspicious, Reacher kills him and hides the body. He then kills Duke, stages the scene to cover his tracks and takes Duke’s place as Beck’s right-hand man.

Episode 4: “Dominique”. By now it is clear that Beck’s real boss, a man going by McCabe, is Quinn, and a flashback episode explains the grudge. In Reacher’s military days, his partner, Sergeant Dominique Kohl, built a case against Quinn for selling state secrets, and Reacher let her make the arrest alone. Quinn kidnapped and murdered her, and Reacher shot him and left him for dead.

Episodes 5 to 7: guns, not drugs. Reacher works out that Quinn is trafficking weapons, not drugs, through Beck’s business. Quinn, meanwhile, fails to recognise Reacher, because the old head wound has left him with memory loss. He is also in debt to Russian gangsters, which matters later.

Quinn sends killers after Neagley, and she fights them off. Reacher and Duffy chase a lead to Los Angeles and discover that Quinn’s buyers are planning a terrorist attack. Worse, Quinn means to hand Teresa over to them as a bonus.

Neagley tails the buyers and learns that the exchange will happen at Beck’s house.

Reacher season 3 recap: the ending explained

If you only need the finale part of this Reacher season 3 recap, start here. Everyone converges on the Beck estate for “Unfinished Business”, and three of the season’s big players do not survive it.

How Paulie dies. Reacher and Paulie fight across the estate and go over a cliff into the ocean, where Paulie seems to drown, but he survives. The last round is at Paulie’s security shack by the gate, over the heavy machine gun he has kept there all season. During the struggle, Reacher plugs the barrel with a bullet, so when Paulie fires at him, the gun explodes in Paulie’s face and kills him.

How Zachary Beck dies. Quinn grabs the buyers’ cash and takes Richard hostage. Zachary confronts him with a toy gun, bluffing that it is real, but the toy gives itself away. Quinn shoots him repeatedly, and Zachary dies in front of his son.

How Quinn dies. Before Reacher can finish things, the Russians Quinn owes money to turn up and claim him. Neagley offers them the buyers’ cash in exchange for Quinn, holding a grenade that turns out to be a dud, and their leader, Taktarov, takes the deal.

Then Reacher tells Quinn, “Her name was Dominique.” The moment Quinn remembers, Reacher kills him with a shotgun.

Who survives. Duffy finds Teresa just in time, shoots the arms dealer holding her and later takes her home to her grandmother. Guillermo Villanueva (Roberto Montesinos), Duffy’s DEA colleague, retires and goes home to his wife. Duffy turns in her badge, then gives Reacher his own speech about not doing relationships before a goodbye kiss.

Reacher urges Richard to take some cash and go and live his own life, and he drives off. Neagley tells Reacher she has worked out why he does what he does: he hates powerful people who think they can get away with anything. She heads home, and Reacher rides off on a motorcycle taken from the Beck property.

What it leaves open. Very little. Quinn, Paulie and Beck are dead, Kohl is finally avenged, and the finale closes its own story, which is why this Reacher season 3 recap has so few loose ends. TVLine read Neagley’s closing scene as a setup for her own spinoff, Neagley, and season 4 premiered on Prime Video on August 12, 2026.

The book vs the show

Everything in this Reacher season 3 recap so far describes the show. Lee Child’s novel goes differently in four big ways:

Element Persuader (book) Season 3 (show)
Neagley Plays no part; Reacher works alone Reacher’s outside investigator and finale backup
Elizabeth Beck Zachary’s wife, effectively a prisoner in her own home Cut entirely
Zachary Beck Survives the story Killed by Quinn while protecting Richard
Quinn’s death Reacher stabs him with a chisel Reacher shoots him with a Persuader shotgun

The shotgun ties the ending to the title: ScreenRant and Men’s Journal both identify Reacher’s weapon in the book and the show as a Mossberg Persuader. SlashFilm adds that the book’s Reacher does not stop to make Quinn remember Kohl.

Anthony Michael Hall has said that an eight-episode season could not include everything from the novel, and Collider argues that losing Elizabeth puts the father and son story at the centre. MovieWeb notes that in the book, Reacher breaks Paulie’s arms and shoots him by the water.

ScreenRant also points out that Neagley’s closing speech borrows a line Reacher says to Kohl in the novel, and that the “Dominique” episode keeps the details of Kohl’s death vague.

Our take

Season 3 has the series’ most personal villain: because Quinn murdered Kohl, Reacher is settling a grudge rather than working a case, and the Paulie fight, which Den of Geek says took three weeks to film, is the show’s most punishing set piece. If the middle of this Reacher season 3 recap sounds slow, that is fair: the undercover episodes drag, and Quinn’s memory loss holds back the confrontation the whole season is built on until the final minutes. Critics loved it anyway: as of October 3, 2026, Rotten Tomatoes shows 98% from 46 reviews, level with season 2 as the best of the four, while the 74% audience score trails seasons 1 (91%) and 2 (77%) but beats season 4 (64%). On balance it ranks third of the four, behind seasons 1 and 2, but no season has a better villain or a better fight.
