Reacher Season 4 Recap and Ending Explained: Who Lives and Who Dies

The Reacher season 4 ending leaves Lila Hoth dead from her own toxin, Amisha Hoth under arrest and the drive everyone was killing for in a journalist’s hands. The season adapts Lee Child’s 2009 novel Gone Tomorrow and moves the story from New York to Philadelphia.

Prime Video released the first three of its eight episodes on August 12, 2026, then one a week until the finale, “Cut”, arrived on September 16.

Spoiler warning: this recap covers all eight episodes of Reacher season 4, including the finale.

The setup

Jack Reacher (Alan Ritchson) is riding a Philadelphia subway train when he clocks a fellow passenger, Anna Merrick, as a possible suicide bomber. Instead, she takes her own life in front of him, and her death pulls him into a hunt for a missing USB drive.

His allies are Anna’s brother, Jacob Merrick (Christopher Rodriguez-Marquette), a small-town cop, and Tamara Green (Sydelle Noel), a Philadelphia detective. Kevin Corrigan plays Detective Shaun Docherty, and Kevin Weisman plays Russell Plum, a journalist who becomes part of the hunt.

Then there are the Hoths. Lila (Agnez Mo) and Amisha (Anggun) arrive from Indonesia claiming to be a mother and daughter in search of Lila’s American father: Congressman John Sampson (Marc Blucas). Reacher also has to get past a crew of hired guns and a CIA agent named Foster, but the people he should fear most are the ones he trusts.

What happens in Reacher season 4

Episodes 1 to 3: cover stories

The Hoths’ story keeps shifting. Amisha turns out not to be Lila’s mother, and Lila now says she is a journalist digging into war crimes tied to an Indonesian general named Putra, and to Sampson’s own past in Indonesia.

Reacher believes her, and the two sleep together in episode 3, “One Small Step”. It is the familiar Reacher romance beat, and the show is about to turn it inside out.

Episodes 4 and 5: the twist

Anna’s missing son, Ben, is dead, and the Hoths killed him. Episode 4 lets viewers in on the truth, and by episode 5, “Bridge”, Reacher’s team has worked out that the two women are killers whose weapon of choice is the karambit, a curved Indonesian blade.

Episodes 6 and 7: the weapon

By episode 6, the Hoths have the drive. It hides the formula for a lethal chemical weapon created during a secret programme in Indonesia years earlier, and Leo Ahlquist, a former military scientist turned businessman, explains it before Reacher kills him.

The women test the toxin on a drug user, then plan to auction it to the highest bidder and show off what it can do at Sampson’s fundraiser. Episode 7, “Vote for Sampson”, ends with the congressman tackling their suicide bomber into the water. The blast kills both men but spares the crowd, and it sets the Reacher season 4 ending in motion.

Reacher season 4 ending explained

The raid

“Cut” sends Reacher, Green and Jacob after the Hoths at their hideout, where the women are making more of the toxin. The raid turns into a brawl with their hired muscle, and one of their men slips away to a nightclub with a batch. Green and Jacob go after him and stop him before he can release it.

Reacher vs the Hoths

Reacher takes on Lila and Amisha, who come at him with karambits in a fight Collider ranked among the most brutal the series has staged. Badly cut, he finally throws Amisha out of a window.

Lila reaches for her last syringe of toxin and tries to use it on him. Reacher wrenches it away and injects her instead, and she dies from the weapon she meant to sell.

Amisha survives the fall. As Foster moves in to finish off the wounded Reacher, Amisha kills the CIA agent and goes after Reacher herself, until Jacob and Green arrive in time to stop her.

Jacob’s choice

The Hoths killed Jacob’s nephew, and now he has Amisha at his mercy. He arrests her instead of killing her, and that decision is the moral centre of the Reacher season 4 ending. Christopher Rodriguez-Marquette told Collider, “I think that embodies the hero’s journey.”

Who lives and who dies

  • Key deaths: Anna Merrick, her son Ben, Leo Ahlquist, John Sampson, Lila Hoth and Foster.
  • Survivors: Reacher, Jacob, Green, Plum (who survives being shot) and Amisha, now in custody.

The drive, the ashes and a cheesesteak

Reacher survives and wakes up in hospital. Green is promoted (TV Fanatic notes a medal for valour and a move to homicide), and Jacob scatters the ashes of Anna and Ben on the beach.

The drive goes to Plum. Reacher hands it over so the story can be published, and tells him to go and get his Pulitzer.

The Reacher season 4 ending then closes where the season began, on a subway train. Reacher remembers Anna, and when a homeless woman sits in a seat like the one Anna sat in, he quietly shares his Philly cheesesteak with her. It is a small kindness rather than a new case.

What it sets up

After the Reacher season 4 ending, Reacher’s next stop should be Mother’s Rest, the small town at the centre of Make Me, the novel season 5 adapts. Season 5 was filming in Toronto in late September 2026 with no release date announced, and Prime Video renewed the series for season 6 that same month.

Frances Neagley sits this season out (Collider’s review flagged her absence), but Maria Sten’s spinoff series, Neagley, dropped all eight episodes on September 16, the same day as the finale. While you wait for more Reacher, our Fallout season 2 recap breaks down another Prime Video finale.

The book vs the show

Gone Tomorrow opens on the New York subway. The show moved to Philadelphia because, director Sam Hill told SlashFilm, the team had already done a New York story and was “trying not to repeat ourselves”.

The villains changed more than their names. In the novel, Lila and Svetlana Hoth turn out to be Al Qaeda terrorists, with Svetlana running a cell and Lila as her pupil, and they are after a photo of the congressman, there called John Sansom, with Osama bin Laden. The show replaces Svetlana with Amisha, makes the pair trained assassins and swaps bin Laden for a fictional Indonesian general.

That raises the stakes, too. In the book the secret is a political embarrassment; on screen, the drive hides the formula for a chemical weapon. Several names change as well: Susan Mark becomes Anna Merrick, and Detective Theresa Lee becomes Tamara Green. According to Men’s Journal, Russell Plum was invented for the show.

The Reacher season 4 ending strays furthest from the book. In the novel, Reacher kills Svetlana with a knife and strangles Lila, then wakes up in hospital, and the congressman survives. TVLine notes that Sansom never sacrifices himself and that his final act is destroying the drive. The show kills Sampson as a hero, lets Amisha live and hands the secret to the press, which TVLine saw as a more hopeful take on the book.

Our take

Season 4 is the darkest Reacher yet and, in its first half, the slowest. Turning Lila from love interest into villain is the boldest swerve the show has made, and the karambit fight in the Reacher season 4 ending is some of its best action. The middle episodes, though, spend too long chasing a drive whose real secret only lands in episode 7.

Critics still rate it highly, at 94% on Rotten Tomatoes as of October 3, 2026, but its 64% audience score is the lowest of the four seasons. By that measure it ranks fourth of the four for now, behind seasons 1, 2 and 3.
