Of everything announced at Marvel’s SDCC 2026 Hall H panel, nothing detonated the room like this: Ryan Gosling is Ghost Rider. A standalone Ghost Rider film arrives in 2028, with Gosling playing Johnny Blaze and Shawn Levy – the director of Deadpool & Wolverine – behind the camera.
What was actually announced
Gosling appeared on the Hall H stage in person and told the crowd this is a character he has wanted to play for a very long time, adding that only one director could do it before bringing out Levy. Per The Hollywood Reporter and Deadline, the film is a theatrical standalone, set for 2028. One scheduling note explains the wait: Gosling and Levy first finish Star Wars: Starfighter, due May 2027. The two are clearly a package deal now, and Marvel just bought the package.
Why this casting is such a big swing
The Ghost Rider concept – a stunt rider who sells his soul and becomes a flaming skeleton of vengeance – has always been a B-movie premise looking for an A-list treatment. Nicolas Cage gave it two gloriously unhinged films in 2007 and 2012; Gabriel Luna’s Robbie Reyes stole a season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. But a two-time Oscar nominee taking the role, with the director who just made the most successful R-rated movie ever? That is Marvel treating Ghost Rider as a prestige property for the first time in its history.
And the fit is better than the memes suggest. Gosling’s whole late-career lane is soulful weirdos with haunted eyes: the stoic getaway driver of Drive, the melancholy replicant of Blade Runner 2049, and yes, Ken. Johnny Blaze is all three of those guys wearing a leather jacket that occasionally catches fire. The internet spent the weekend joking about Kenergy becoming Hellfire, and honestly, the joke is the pitch.
The bigger picture: Midnight Sons watch
Here is the speculative part, clearly labeled: Marvel now has Blade in development limbo, Moon Knight on the shelf, Man-Thing and Werewolf by Night established, and a prestige Ghost Rider arriving in 2028 – right after the Multiverse Saga concludes. If the next saga has a supernatural corner, Ghost Rider just became its anchor. Nothing is confirmed, but you do not cast Ryan Gosling for one movie.
What we still do not know
No title, no exact release date beyond 2028, no story details, and no word on whether this Rider connects to the existing MCU timeline or rides in fresh. Given the post-Secret Wars landscape, a clean-slate start is entirely possible. Expect the next real info drop at Disney’s D23 Expo in August.
